Mongolia heads to polls amid weak opposition, corruption scandals and public frustration

Mongolia is heading to the polls this week for the first time since its constitution was overhauled to broaden representation. Experts believe weak opposition to the ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) will result in little change or serious measures to address recent corruption scandals. Despite reforms designed to increase the inclusion of smaller parties, public frustration remains high due to prominent corruption cases and a perceived lack of accountability. With no strong challenger, the MPP is expected to maintain its dominance, leaving many sceptical about the prospects for significant political change. ‘Widening rift’ between Israeli PM and army over ‘Hamas defeat’ comments

There is a growing rift between the Israeli government and its army. The Israeli military’s spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, stated that defeating Hamas is impossible because it is “an ideology” ingrained in the people. In response, the Israeli prime minister’s office expressed anger and issued a statement asserting that one of the war’s goals is to eliminate Hamas’s military and political capabilities. However, the army’s spokesperson countered, saying that such claims mislead the public. This situation highlights the conflict between Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies and the army’s realistic assessment on the ground. Al Jazeera’s Hamdah Salhut reports from Amman, Jordan.
