Rwanda, Mozambique forces pursue rebels after port city recaptured

A joint force of troops from Mozambique and Rwanda which regained control of a strategic port from the armed group al-Shabab in the north says it is still pursuing the fighters in neighbouring areas. Mocimboa da Praia was a major rebel stronghold used by the group to launch attacks in other parts of the mineral and natural gas rich Cabo Delgado province. Rwanda, Mozambique forces recapture port city from rebels

Rwandan forces have helped Mozambique’s army recapture the key northern port of Mocimboa da Praia from an armed group. Known locally as al-Shabab, the rebels used the port to launch a series of attacks across the oil and mineral-rich province of Cabo Delgado. Thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in the past four years because of these attacks. Zimbabwe plans to dispatch soldiers to Mozambique

Zimbabwe is the latest country in southern Africa that is planning to dispatch soldiers to help fight an armed group in neighbouring Mozambique. Mozambique army says town attacked by fighters is now secure

Mozambique’s army says it has retaken control of the northern town of Palma from a group of fighters linked to ISIL (ISIS) that attacked it last month. A military spokesman says a significant number of fighters were killed during the operation. The UN says more than 20,000 people stayed in Palma despite the attack It is hoped those who left will be able to return home soon. Mozambique attack: ISIL claims responsibility for Palma violence

The ISIL (ISIS) group has claimed responsibility for an attack on the town of Palma in northern Mozambique, which left dozens of people dead and thousands missing. It said its fighters had seized the town in the gas-rich region after several days of fighting. Security forces are trying to secure Palma; the exact number of people killed, injured and unaccounted for – is still unknown. Armed groups have been launching attacks in the region since 2017. Dozens of ‘defenceless’ civilians killed in Mozambique attack

Mozambique’s military says dozens of civilians have been killed in a five-day siege, including seven who tried to flee from a hotel in the northern town of Palma. A military spokesman says hundreds of other people – locals and foreigners – were rescued from the town which is a logistics hub for international gas projects in Cabo Delgado province where fighting is still ongoing. A three-year conflict in northern Mozambique has displaced about 670,000 people, according to the United Nations.
