Sierra Leone struggling to recover 20 years after civil war’s end

It was a war infamous for its cruelty, mutilations and child soldiers paid for by exports of so-called “blood diamonds” mined by slave labour. The war ended 20 years ago in Sierra Leone, but the recovery and reconciliation processes have been slow. The government is focused on fighting corruption, improving infrastructure and reducing unemployment, but significant hurdles and divisions remain.
