Flash floods hit western Rwanda, killing more than 100

The death toll in the flooding in western Rwanda has gone up to 127, according to the office of President Paul Kagame, as a rescue operation is under way to reach stranded people amid torrential rains. “Rescue interventions are ongoing in the most affected districts … in order to secure endangered citizens,” Kagame’s office said in a statement on Wednesday. Six people were also killed overnight in neighbouring Uganda, in the mountainous southwestern Kisoro district, the Uganda Red Cross said. Al Jazeera’s Mmalegabe Motsepe reports. UN agrees on role for Int’l Court of Justice in climate change

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution proposed by the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu to seek an opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on what legal obligations nations are under to protect climate systems and people affected by climate change. Co-sponsored by 132 countries at the UN, the resolution was adopted on Wednesday by a consensus. The UN is now empowered to seek the ICJ’s opinion on what countries’ legal obligations are to protect current and future generations from climate change. One-quarter of central African rainforest could be gone by 2050

Rainforests in central Africa are rapidly disappearing due to logging and mining. It is one of the issues on the agenda at the One Forest Summit, under way in Gabon. The timber from these rainforests, now used to make furniture for people in wealthier countries, was once part of what has been called the planet’s “other lung” and a precious natural barrier to climate change. Afghanistan bitter winter: Severe cold kills more than 150 people

A wave of freezing temperatures is sweeping across much of Afghanistan. In roughly two weeks, more than 150 people have died. Most were those living in remote rural villages cut off by heavy snowfalls. UN report: Ozone layer slowly healing, set to mend within decades

Earth’s protective ozone layer is healing at a pace that will fully mend the hole over Antarctica in about 43 years, a United Nations report has found. The scientific assessment conducted every four years found a recovery in progress, more than 35 years after every nation in the world agreed to stop producing chemicals that deplete the ozone layer in the Earth’s atmosphere.
