Farmers in the Netherlands have blockaded supermarket distribution centres in continuing protests against new environmental rules on nitrogen emissions that are likely to put many of them out of business. Fishers on Monday blocked ports in a show of support for farmers. The blockade prevented ferries from sailing to almost all the Wadden Islands off the country’s northern coast and caused lengthy delays, shipping companies reported. The European Commission is considering a plan to impose a universal charger for all brands of mobile phones, tablets and headphones. A legislative proposal presented on Thursday details why there should be a common charging port for mobile phones, tablets and headphones. The move would likely affect iPhone-maker Apple the most. Its chargers are used exclusively for Apple products. Supporters say the move would create a more convenient market for consumers. Countries across Europe are returning to lockdown, as the continent grapples with a surge in coronavirus infections. In Germany, police used water cannon and pepper spray to disperse anti-lockdown protesters in the city of Kassel. In neighbouring Switzerland, more than 5,000 protesters gathered in the town of Liestal to demand an end to COVID restrictions which have shut restaurants and other public places for months. Elsewhere in Europe, there were more anti-lockdown protests on Saturday from Bulgaria to Romania, Serbia to Croatia.
