Moldova: Attacks in Transnistria raise fears of Ukraine war spreading

There have been fears that the Russia-Ukraine war is widening and that Russia has its sights set on former Soviet republic Moldova. Last week, a series of explosions were reported in different parts of Transnistria, a Russian-backed breakaway region in Moldova which borders Ukraine. Blasts tore through the state security headquarters in Tiraspol on Monday and two explosions damaged Soviet-era radio masts on Tuesday in the village of Maiac in Grigoriopol district. Moldova holds urgent security meeting after Transnistria blasts

Moldovan President Maia Sandu convened an urgent meeting of the country’s Supreme Security Council after two blasts damaged Soviet-era radio masts in the breakaway region of Transnistria. The incidents on Tuesday came after local officials reported several explosions at the state security ministry in the city of Tiraspol at 6pm (15:00 GMT) the day before, on a public holiday for the Orthodox Easter. Moldovan authorities are sensitive to any sign of growing tensions in Transnistria, an unrecognised Moscow-backed sliver of land bordering southwestern Ukraine, especially since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. ‘Guaranteed defeat’: President Putin supervises nuclear drills

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin oversaw military manoeuvres by strategic nuclear missile forces as the worst crisis since the Cold War grips Europe. The Kremlin said on Saturday that Russia successfully test-launched hypersonic and cruise missiles at sea and land-based targets during the exercises. Putin sat observing the war games on screens along with the president of neighbouring Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, from what the Kremlin described as a “situation centre”. “All the missiles hit their targets, confirming their performance objectives,” the Kremlin said, adding the drills included Tu-95 bombers and submarines. Greeks struggle to afford food and electricity as inflation soars

Soaring inflation is hitting living standards across the developed world. And it is largely being driven by a rise in energy prices. In Greece, electricity prices alone trebled last year, and the government is spending more than $2bn subsidising energy costs for households, businesses and farmers. But some people still have to choose between eating and paying their power bills. Greek incomes were battered by an eight-year depression following the 2008 global financial crisis and they still have not recovered.
