An estimated 120,000 Gambians live and work overseas, most of them in Europe and the United States. It is a sign of hope for an economy that has been battered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Partial results from most districts show the incumbent president well ahead of his main competitor, Ousainou Darboe. However, Darboe and two other candidates have said that they would not accept the results.
