More than a dozen suspected gang members in Haiti were lynched and their bodies set on fire by residents in the capital Port-au-Prince, police and witnesses said, as the United Nations warned that insecurity in the city had “reached levels comparable to countries in armed conflict”. Haiti National Police said in a brief statement that officers in the city’s Canape Vert section stopped and searched a minibus for contraband early on Monday and had confiscated weapons from suspects before they were “unfortunately lynched by members of the population”. The leader of a coalition of Haitian gangs is asking the US to help him overthrow the government of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. The head of the G9 gang Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier said he wanted Haiti’s elite gone. He had previously said he would ensure the safe passage of fuel trucks gangs had blocked if Henry was removed. Gangs in Haiti have become more politically assertive since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July which has plunged the country into further lawlessness. Haiti’s acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, whose leadership of the nation has been disputed since the July 7 assassination of President Jovenel Moise, told the Washington Post newspaper he will cede power Monday.
