Around 35 million Kurdish reside in the mountainous regions located at the borders of Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Iran, and Armenia. During the rise of the Ottoman empire, the Kurds were promised a separate homeland. When the borders of modern Turkey and its neighbours were drawn there was no more talk of an independent Kurdistan.
