Putin claims Ukraine’s counteroffensive is ‘not succeeding’

Russian President Vladimir Putin claims the Ukrainian counter-offensive is “not succeeding.” Russia’s air defence forces and fleet in the Black Sea shot down ten Ukrainian drones over the Crimean port of Sevastopol, according to Russian officials. According to Ukrainian and Polish officials, Wagner Group fighters have arrived in Belarus from Russia. Putin says Russia has a “sufficient stockpile” of cluster bombs and reserves the right to use them if such munitions are used against Russian forces in Ukraine. Battle tanks play a key role in Ukraine’s counteroffensive advance

Battle tanks are playing a key role in the Ukraine war. Both sides are using armoured units in their advance. Western countries have promised and supplied Ukraine with modern tanks to help in its counteroffensive against Russia. But, the majority of Ukraine’s own tanks are from the old soviet-era and require regular maintenance. Al Jazeera’s Assed Baig joined a tank unit in Eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian army report gains against Russian troops around Bakhmut

Ukraine says it is making gains in the offensive against Russian forces to recapture Bakhmut. The city in eastern Ukraine has been at the heart of fierce fighting for months. Ukraine’s armed forces released a video showing what it said were soldiers storming Russian positions. The general staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has said in its evening report that Russian forces made unsuccessful attempts to advance in the Lyman sector, as artillery shelling killed at least eight civilians and wounded 13 in the eastern town. Ukrainian forces advance southward, mirroring success in the east

Ukrainian forces achieved their biggest breakthrough in the country’s south since Russia invaded, pushing across Moscow’s defence lines on Monday and advancing along the Dnieper River, recapturing a number of villages along the way and threatening enemy supply lines. Ukraine’s advance targets supply lines for as many as 25,000 Russian troops on the west bank of the Dnieper. Ukraine has already destroyed the main bridges, forcing Russian forces to use makeshift crossings. A substantial advance downriver could cut them off entirely. Kyiv gave little information about the gains in the south, but Russian sources acknowledged that Ukrainian troops had advanced dozens of kilometres along the river’s west bank, recapturing a […]

Ukraine declares full control of Lyman after Russian forces retreat

After being encircled by Ukrainian forces, Russia has pulled its troops out of the strategic eastern Ukrainian city of Lyman – the latest victory for Kyiv’s counteroffensive. The announcement on Saturday came a day after President Vladimir Putin proclaimed the annexation of four Ukrainian regions – including Donetsk, where Lyman is located – and placed them under Russia’s nuclear umbrella, at a ceremony condemned by Kyiv and the West as an “illegitimate farce”. Ukraine’s defence ministry wrote on Twitter that “almost all” the Russian troops in Lyman had either been captured or killed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later said in a video address that although the Ukrainian flag was flying […]

LATEST UPDATES: Russia forces ‘encircled’ in Lyman, Ukraine’s nuclear plant director detained

Ukraine has encircled Russia’s forces around the eastern town of Lyman, in an operation that is still under way, a Ukrainian military spokesperson said on Saturday. The director-general of Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been detained by a Russian patrol, according to Energoatom, the state agency in charge of the plant. Russian President Vladimir Putin proclaimed the annexation of territory seized in his invasion in four regions – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia – amounting to 15 percent of total Ukrainian territory on Friday.
