US Yemen envoy urges response on ceasefire plan with Houthis

A spokesman for the Houthi rebels in Yemen says they have rejected a United States plan for a nationwide ceasefire, insisting it only represents the views of Saudi Arabia and the United Nations. Earlier, the US envoy for Yemen said the Houthis appeared to be prioritising a military offensive to take the Marib region, and warned the country will spiral into greater conflict without a halt to fighting. Saudi Arabia thwarts missiles while Yemen’s Marib fighting rages

Saudi Arabia said it has intercepted and thwarted several aerial assaults by Houthi rebels in Yemen targeting the capital Riyadh and other southern cities. The attack came as Houthi rebels push forward in the northern Yemeni province of Marib. They launched an offensive against the Saudi-backed Yemeni government there in early February. Saturday was the most violent day yet. The Yemeni government has issued urgent calls for the Houthis to stop their offensive. They have warned of a humanitarian catastrophe. Several killed in Yemen floods

Flash floods have hit several provinces in Yemen, killing at least 20 people, including children. The regions of Marib and Hajjah – east and west of the capital Sanaa – are some of the worst affected. Two weeks of heavy rains have made thousands homeless. Yemen’s battlefield moves closer to key city of Marib

The United Nations special envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffiths, has called for immediate de-escalation as a drastic surge in fighting threatens to exacerbate the country’s long-running war and further complicate a fragile peace process. Some say it might jeopardise two years of efforts by the UN negotiators to secure peace between Houthi rebels and the UN-recognised government. The government has been fighting the rebels since 2014, when they overran the capital Sanaa. The conflict has left tens of thousands of people dead and triggered what the UN says is the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
