Mozambique’s military says dozens of civilians have been killed in a five-day siege, including seven who tried to flee from a hotel in the northern town of Palma. A military spokesman says hundreds of other people – locals and foreigners – were rescued from the town which is a logistics hub for international gas projects in Cabo Delgado province where fighting is still ongoing. A three-year conflict in northern Mozambique has displaced about 670,000 people, according to the United Nations. More than 180 people including foreign workers are trapped inside a hotel in a northern Mozambique town under siege for three days by fighters linked to the ISIL (ISIS) group, according to workers and security sources. Several people were dead, AFP news agency reported citing witnesses and a rights group, after the attack in the town of Palma near a liquified natural gas (LNG) site in Cabo Delgado province. Reuters news agency on Saturday also reported the death of at least one civilian and the wounding of others when their convoy was attacked as they tried to flee. Mozambique has turned to the European Union for help to stop attacks by ISIL-linked groups in its northern region. The president wants the EU to train its forces to battle armed groups which emerged three years ago in Cabo Delgado. Since then, the fighters have stepped up the violence, seizing important towns and targeting the military. The conflict has raised fears for stability and security in the surrounding region. The World Food Programme says more than 300,000 people have fled the violence.
