Namibia’s President Hage Geingob dies aged 82

Namibia’s President, Hage Geingob has died at the age of 82. He passed away in hospital in the capital Windhoek. It was announced last month he had cancer – and was undergoing treatment. Geingob was the nation’s third president following independence in 1990. While he was well respected across Africa, some say a corruption scandal tainted his legacy. Kenyan conservationist Richard Leakey dies aged 77

World-renowned paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey, known for his fossil-finding and conservation work in his native Kenya, has died at 77, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced. Leakey, whose groundbreaking discoveries helped prove that humanity evolved in Africa, remained energetic into his 70s despite bouts of skin cancer, kidney and liver disease. Born on December 19, 1944, Leakey was destined for palaeoanthropology – the study of the human fossil record – as the middle son of Louis and Mary Leakey, perhaps the world’s most famous discoverers of ancestral hominids. Zambia’s founding President Kenneth Kaunda dies aged 97

Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s founding president and liberation hero, has died at a military hospital in Lusaka where he was being treated for pneumonia, his son, Kambarage, said on Thursday. He was 97. Kaunda ruled Zambia from 1964, when the southern African nation won its independence from Britain, until 1991, and afterwards become one of Africa’s most committed activists against HIV/AIDS. “I am sad to inform (members) we have lost Mzee. Let’s pray for him,” Kambarage said on the late president’s Facebook page.
