Desperate journeys: Record number of migrants crossing deadly Darien gap

The number of migrants passing through the Darien Gap, one of the world’s most dangerous tropical rainforests, is expected to surpass one million before the end of this year. Most are heading for the United States, where as many as 9,000 people attempt to cross the border daily. So far efforts by the United States and countries like Panama to stop the unprecedented wave through Central America to the US border are not working. Panama protests, blockades continue as deal with gov’t collapses

A deal on fuel prices between Panama’s government and protesters has collapsed. On Sunday the government agreed to freeze the cost of fuel for three months. But protesters say they want more concessions. Indigenous groups angry about fuel and food prices have been blocking a major highway for more than a week.
