Peru roadblocks resume as president urges ‘peace, calm, unity’

Anti-government demonstrations and roadblocks have resumed in Peru after a two-week pause as the South American nation continues to reel from last month’s impeachment, arrest and detention of former President Pedro Castillo. Peruvian protesters on Wednesday used stones and burning tyres to barricade main routes in the southern regions of Puno, Cusco, Apurimac and Arequipa, as well as in Junin, a department in the centre of the country. The crowds chanted for the removal of President Dina Boluarte, who took over on December 7 after the country’s opposition-held Congress overwhelmingly voted to remove Castillo. Peru president urges Congress to approve early polls amid unrest

Peru’s embattled President Dina Boluarte has exhorted the country’s Congress to bring forward general elections, as nationwide anti-government protests continue following the removal of President Pedro Castillo last week. In a national address on Saturday, Boluarte slammed Congress, which on Friday failed to muster enough votes to approve her proposal for a constitutional amendment that would have pushed up elections, originally scheduled for 2026, to December 2023. Peru declares nationwide state of emergency as crisis deepens

Peru has declared a nationwide state of emergency, amid a week of protest and political upheaval following the removal and detention of former President Pedro Castillo. Peruvian defence minister Alberto Otarola announced the new 30-day measure, which he said involved “the suspension of freedom of movement and assembly” and could include a curfew, on Wednesday due to “acts of vandalism and violence”, including roadblocks. “The National Police with the support of the Armed Forces will ensure the control throughout the national territory of personal property and, above all, strategic infrastructure and the safety and wellbeing of all Peruvians,” the minister said.
