Kenya cult leader Paul Mackenzie on trial for manslaughter

The leader of a Kenyan starvation sect has gone on trial for manslaughter over the deaths of more than 400 of his followers in one of the world’s worst cult-related tragedies. Paul Mackenzie, head of the Good News International Church, is currently facing charges of murder, child torture and “terrorism” after last April’s discovery of hundreds of bodies of his followers who had starved to death on his instructions. Biden warns Israel risks losing support over ‘indiscriminate’ Gaza bombing

US President Joe Biden has warned that Israel risks losing international support over its “indiscriminate bombing” of civilians in its war against Hamas in the besieged Gaza Strip. “Israel’s security can rest on the United States, but right now it has more than the United States. Kenya’s stolen islands: Three companies could face land grab charges

Anti-corruption investigators in Kenya have recovered stolen islands in a nature reserve in the Indian Ocean. Three companies are now facing possible court proceedings for land-grabbing, and two have agreed to hand over the illegally-acquired land titles for the islands. Niger coup leaders rebuff overtures backed by US, UN & AU to talk

Military leaders of the coup in Niger have refused to receive representatives from the United Nations, the African Union – and the regional organisation, ECOWAS. The coup leaders said their safety could not be guaranteed. US Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland flew to Niamey on Monday but was denied permission to meet with coup leader Abdourahamane Tiani or with Bazoum, who is in detention. Burkina Faso and Mali warn against foreign intervention after Niger coup

Burkina Faso and Mali have warned that any intervention in neighbouring Niger would be considered a “declaration of war” against their two countries, a signal of support for leaders of the recent coup there. In a statement released on Monday, the governments of Mali and Burkina Faso also refused to implement what they called “illegal, illegitimate and inhumane sanctions” against the Nigerien people and authorities. The message comes less than a week after soldiers guarding Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum took the leader into custody on July 26, declaring they had “put an end” to his administration.
