Niger coup leaders rebuff overtures backed by US, UN & AU to talk

Military leaders of the coup in Niger have refused to receive representatives from the United Nations, the African Union – and the regional organisation, ECOWAS.
The coup leaders said their safety could not be guaranteed.
US Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland flew to Niamey on Monday but was denied permission to meet with coup leader Abdourahamane Tiani or with Bazoum, who is in detention.
Instead, she spoke for two hours with other army officers.

Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford reports from Senegal’s capital Dakar.
