DR Congo conflict: Thousands of people flee fighting near Goma

Thousands of people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have been on the move, fleeing for safety after seeing soldiers retreating. The conflict between the military and the M23 fighters is moving closer to Goma, the regional capital of North Kivu province. The DRC government has repeatedly accused Rwanda of backing the rebels, an allegation it denies. Thousands flee from DR Congo clashes to bordering Uganda

The Red Cross says more than 6,000 people have fled into western Uganda. Fighting between the M23 rebel group and the army in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has sent thousand on the run. Nine years ago, M23 took control of swaths of territory along the DRC border with Rwanda, but was defeated in 2014 with the help of a peacekeeping mission.
