Houthi shipping attacks: Surviving Filipino crew heading home

US and British warplanes are reported to have carried out 17 airstrikes in western Yemen. Media linked to Houthi forces say the port city of Hodeidah and other coastal areas were hit. They’re the latest in weeks of allied strikes in response to months of Houthi missile attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. The US military says retaliatory strikes were launched after Houthi fighters failed to hit a container ship in the Red Sea. The US says a maritime drone and anti-ship missiles were destroyed. ‘Don’t do it’: Somali president warns Ethiopia over Somaliland port deal

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has warned Ethiopia against taking steps to implement a controversial port deal it brokered with the breakaway region of Somaliland. Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on January 1, Somaliland leased landlocked Ethiopia 20km (12 miles) of its coastland around the port of Berbera, on the Gulf of Aden, for 50 years for military and commercial purposes. In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Tuesday, Mohamud said Ethiopian assets would have to cross into Somalia’s territory in order to reach the leased area and warned Addis Ababa against taking such a step. “So far Ethiopians haven’t come into Somalia. If they will, then […]

US forces sink ‘Houthi’ boats in Red Sea after attack on Maersk vessel

The United States military says it has sunk three boats waging an attack on a container ship in the Red Sea as it continues its patrol mission to counter threats from Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Helicopters from two US warships – the USS Eisenhower and USS Gravely – shot at the “Iranian-backed Houthi small boats” in self-defence on Sunday morning while responding to an SOS call from the Singapore-flagged vessel Maersk Hangzhou, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said. The US helicopters sunk three of the boats, killing several of their crew, it said. A fourth boat escaped. Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar joins us live from Djibouti for the latest updates. Subscribe […]

Dozens of vessels stranded in Djibouti as Houthis ‘set new rules’ in Red Sea

The US Central Command reports that over 10 hours, 12 one-way attack drones, three anti-ship ballistic missiles, and two land attack cruise missiles launched by the Houthis have been successfully neutralized by the US military. This has led to significant disruptions in business, with a nearly 35 percent reduction in the number of ships transiting the Bab al-Mandab strait. Consequently, numerous vessels have been stranded for six days, uncertain about when they will receive clearance to depart. The Houthis are imposing new regulations, demanding assurances from every passing ship that they have no connections with Israel—neither heading to nor departing from Israeli ports, and not owned by Israelis. Al Jazeera’s […]

Explainer: Who are the Houthis?

The Houthis began in the 1990’s as a moderate theological movement of the Zaydis, a Shia minority group. Fighting corruption was one of their main aims. The 2003 US invasion of Iraq was a turning point. Analysts believe the war transformed the Houthis into a resistance group with deep anti-American sentiments. In 2015, Houthi fighters seized Yemen’s capital Sanaa. It triggered more than nine years of war between the Saudi-led coalition, which backs the internationally recognised government, and the Houthis, supported by Iran. On October the 31st, the Houthis entered the war in Gaza, firing drones and missiles at Israel. And earlier this month, the Houthis said they would target […]

Shipping companies pause Red Sea journeys after Houthi attacks

A Hong-Kong based shipping company has suspended its activity to and from Israel. That’s after vessels in the Red Sea came under attack from Houthi fighters in Yemen. The Houthis say they’ll continue their attacks if Israel doesn’t stop its war on Gaza. And their activities are starting to have far-reaching consequences, not just for Israel, but globally. Al Jazeera’s Sara Khairat reports from the Israeli port city of Haifa. Maritime expert Victoria Mitchell says while recent attacks on ships in the Red Sea have not led to a complete shutdown of the trading route, there are implications for individual ship operators. “What is important to highlight is the concern […]
