Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has warned Ethiopia against taking steps to implement a controversial port deal it brokered with the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on January 1, Somaliland leased landlocked Ethiopia 20km (12 miles) of its coastland around the port of Berbera, on the Gulf of Aden, for 50 years for military and commercial purposes.
In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera on Tuesday, Mohamud said Ethiopian assets would have to cross into Somalia’s territory in order to reach the leased area and warned Addis Ababa against taking such a step.
“So far Ethiopians haven’t come into Somalia. If they will, then that will be a problem at a different level,” Mohamud said.

The juvenile Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed is like a drunk driver down the hill without a break. He has been creating so much pain and chaos to Ethiopia to the point that the country is at the edge of disintegration. Millions died, displaced and impoverished since he came to power. Most probably, this was his silly strategy to garner the support he lost domestically by signing a MoU to have a military port in Somaliland – in return to acknowledging their independence. This is like a bombshell to the Horn of Africa, AU and Ethiopians as well. As long as this man is in power, he is adding more and more problems left and right to the myriads of domestic crisis. Ethiopia has always respected the sovereignty of Somalia until this MoU signed by the unpopular Abiy Ahmed. Ethiopia has also been like a second home for millions of Somalians during the crisis in Somalia and vice versa. The friendship of the two countries should not be affected with incompetent leaders. Hopefully, the MoU fails to realize so that no unnecessary war is triggered between the two nations.

The Republic of Somalia, whose leader Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is the legal owner of the land called Somaliland. The international community (UN) recognises Somaliland as part of (region of) The Republic of Somalia. You buy a piece of land from the owner and not from a “self proclaimed owner”. Ethiopia’s deal with Somaliland is shady to say the least.

Somaliland is a secessionist movement that claims the British protectorate borders in northern Somalia, but it is not a de facto state recognized by any country in the world, let alone regional blocs like IGAD, East African Community, or multilateral bodies like the African Union or the United Nations. This entity lacks legitimacy in the region it claims sovereignty over, and its current leader Musa Bihi Abdi, a former combat pilot in the Somali Air Force, has been ruling with an iron fist since his term of office expired in November 2022. He is a former rebel leader in the Somali civil war, who once said “If I can kill, I will show no remorse or clemency”. He has lost over 40% of the landmass to unionists in Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn regions (SSC), who resisted his separatist domination after eight months of continuous shelling and bombardment of Las Anod, the biggest city in Sool region, which left thousands dead and 200,000 more displaced from their homes. He has also suppressed any protests that challenge his dwindling rule in the tri-city administration of Somaliland proper, that is Hargeisa, Burao, and Berbera, by using live fire to disperse crowds, which in turn has led to many dissenting groups taking up arms against his administration in the mountainous parts of Somaliland. In the far-flung countryside from his seat at Hargeisa, Musa rules by proxy with traditional leaders he has bribed and ragtag local militias who regularly switch to the unionist side whenever their payments are delayed or cut off. It is this desperate leadership of Musa Bihi that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed found an equally desperate partner to distract from their internal problems and failings.
This president has admitted conducting talks in bad faith with Somaliland. Somaliland has always been clear that the sole reason for talking to Somalia is to agree on how to move forward as 2 states. Here he blatantly lies and says the talks are about unification. Somaliland is not in your jurisdiction. Try regaining control of the country you actually do speak for. This president can’t even enter Somaliland, let alone anything else.
