More than 2,000 arrested at anti-war protests in Russia

Police in Russia have arrested more than 2,000 anti-war protesters across the country, an independent monitor said, on the fourth day of President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine that took many Russians by surprise. OVD-Info, which has documented crackdowns on Russia’s opposition for years, said 2,114 protesters were arrested on Sunday. At a meeting with his top officials, Russian president ordered the defence minister and the chief of the military’s general staff to put the nuclear deterrent forces in a “special regime of combat duty”.
