Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a partial mobilisation of reservists to bolster his forces in Ukraine, an unpopular move that sparked rare protests across the country and led to some 1,300 arrests.
The risky order follows setbacks for Putin’s troops nearly seven months after they invaded Ukraine. The first such call-up in Russia since World War II heightened tensions with Ukraine’s Western backers, who derided it as an act of weakness and desperation.
And the EU Commission says many people are now trying to leave Russia.
Almost all flights out of Moscow appear to be fully booked – and traffic has surged at land borders.
But the Kremlin says reports of a mass exodus are exaggerated.

Tbh, Russian’s brought this on themselves. They had 20 years of increasingly repressive rule and they didn’t do anything about it and just looked the other way as Putin and his henchmen stole their money, killed and jailed the political opposition trying to make Russian’s life any better. The West was consistently warning them where it would lead. They had access to free information so there’s no excuse that they where being manipulated. This is the price they have to pay, 20 years in jail or high risk of death on the front line. Something like 90% risk of death if Putin decides to go even further and attack NATO. Anyone staying around in Russia will relive the harsh repression of the cold war and the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The immediate call-up of 300,000 reservists will concern those who have previously served in the Russian army and have combat experience or specialised military skills. Students or conscripts — young men serving mandatory 12-month terms in the armed forces — will not be included.
The reservists cannot physically be deployed to Ukraine immediately as they will need to first undergo refresher or new training and be made familiar with the way Russia executes what it calls its “special military operation”.
