Death toll climbs as South Africa violence spirals

At least 70 people have died and more than 1,200 people have been arrested after days of riots and looting across South Africa. Protests began after former President Jacob Zuma turned himself in on July 7 to police to serve a jail term for contempt of court. South Africa has been under a COVID-19 lockdown for more than a year and the demonstrations have expanded to include concerns about increasing poverty and inequality. South Africa deploys army in two provinces to quell protests

South Africa’s military has been deployed after protests against the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma turned violent. At least six people have been killed and hundreds arrested in Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng province. Zuma is in prison for refusing to obey court orders to appear before a panel on investigating corruption during his time in office. South Africa top court orders Jacob Zuma to prison for contempt

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been found guilty of contempt of court and sentenced to 15 months in jail by the country’s top court. This came after he failed to appear before an inquiry investigating corruption during his time in office. A commission has been hearing allegations the wealthy Gupta family used its friendship with Zuma to win government contracts and influence policy.
