South Sudan unified army: Gov’t troops and ex-rebels join ranks

The ranks of South Sudan’s army are now made up of both government troops and former rebel fighters. It is part of the peace deal signed in 2018. More than 100,000 people have been displaced from the usually calm county of Kajo Keji in South Sudan. The area is now militarised and split between government troops and rebel fighters. The government has been fighting the rebels since 2013 when the ethnic war first started, two years into the country’s independence from Sudan.
