Taliban leaders have met officials from the United States in Qatar for the first time since their return to power in Afghanistan two years ago. Thousands flee amid fighting between Taliban and Afghan forces

Heavy fighting is continuing in Afghanistan’s southwestern province of Helmand between Taliban fighters and government troops. Violence escalated on Sunday, despite continuing peace negotiations in Qatar that started more than a month ago. More than 30,000 people have since fled to the provincial capital of Lashkar Gar.
