A military spokesman says a significant number of fighters were killed during the operation. The ISIL (ISIS) group has claimed responsibility for an attack on the town of Palma in northern Mozambique, which left dozens of people dead and thousands missing. It said its fighters had seized the town in the gas-rich region after several days of fighting. Security forces are trying to secure Palma; the exact number of people killed, injured and unaccounted for – is still unknown. Armed groups have been launching attacks in the region since 2017. Mozambique’s military says dozens of civilians have been killed in a five-day siege, including seven who tried to flee from a hotel in the northern town of Palma. A military spokesman says hundreds of other people – locals and foreigners – were rescued from the town which is a logistics hub for international gas projects in Cabo Delgado province where fighting is still ongoing. A three-year conflict in northern Mozambique has displaced about 670,000 people, according to the United Nations.
