Ukraine war: Buhas village under separatist control

In the second agreed corridor, the village of Buhas was expecting to receive people from the city of Volnovakha fleeing the war. However, residents are hunkering down in bomb shelters as fighting continues all around them, making humanitarian evacuations nearly impossible. The area is now under the control of Russian-backed rebel forces from Donetsk – just a few kilometres from the latest front line. Anxiety grows in eastern Ukraine as residents brace for Russian invasion

The regions in eastern Ukraine recognised by Russia as independent extend far beyond areas under rebel control. This is creating more uncertainty for those living near the frontline of the country’s long-running separatist conflict. With the Minsk agreement now in tatters – Ukraine has declared Avdiivka and other towns and villages along the frontline, restricted areas. Ukrainian soldiers in front lines report intensified shelling

Ukrainian government soldiers in front-line trenches in Ukraine’s east said on Monday that heavy shelling from Russian-backed separatists had intensified to provoke all-out conflict amid fears of Russia seeking a pretext for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian troops have battled Russian-backed separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk breakaway regions bordering Russia since 2014. A ceasefire deal in 2015 halted the worst fighting, but shelling has intensified along the “line of contact” since last week as Russia masses forces along Ukraine’s borders. Ukraine-Russia crisis: Life inside separatist-controlled Donesk

In the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic, a breakaway region of eastern Ukraine, little has changed since the fighting broke out in 2014. Most of the people who used to live there are too scared to return because of sporadic shelling and because fears are growing about potential renewed conflict. But the young generation, many of whom were children when the conflict started, seem determined to live their lives as normally as they can. Ukraine-Russia crisis: Western governments put their forces on alert as tension rise

The crisis between Russia and Ukraine has prompted one of the biggest mobilisations of Western forces in Europe in generations, but it is a delicate balancing act. The West fears Moscow is preparing a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while the Kremlin says it is countering decades of NATO expansion eastwards. Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula caught allied Western forces off guard. With European security once again at stake, the NATO alliance wants its presence firmly felt. Many in eastern Ukraine have been living with conflict for years as fighting between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian forces killed estimated thousands of people. Ukrainians join reserve army amid tensions with Russia

Ukraine is shoring up its defences and calling up civilians to join the military reserves in preparation for a possible Russian invasion. A third of Ukrainians say they are ready to volunteer to help the government form up to 25 brigades set to be deployed in cities across the country. They are part of the strategic defence plan – providing popular resistance in case the Ukrainian army is overwhelmed.
