Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu has visited Russian troops in Ukraine, the RIA Novosti news agency reports, his first public appearance since the weekend mutiny by the Wagner Group. The leader of the Wagner Group – whose mercenaries have fought side by side with the Russian military – led a rebellion on Saturday. Wagner’s chief has blamed Sergei Shoigu for his fighters’ deaths. He also accused him of incompetence and corruption. Ukrainian forces have launched several attacks on Russian positions – since Saturday’s mutiny. Some of the Russian forces had to leave their positions because of the attempted rebellion by Wagner group – but are starting to return to the front lines. The Ukrainian army is pushing south and east in what appears to be an attempt to take advantage of the instability in Russia. Russia’s defence ministry says its forces have repelled attacks near Bakhmut. Fighting is also ongoing in the Zaporizhzhia region and west of Donetsk. Ukrainian forces have struck a key bridge linking mainland and Crimea, Russia-appointed Kherson governor says. Chongar bridge has been called ‘the gate to Crimea’ – which is the territory annexed by Russia in 2014. Crimea’s governor says no casualties have been reported, and he says the attack was carried out by a Storm Shadow missile. Russia’s defence minister Sergei Shoigu says Ukraine plans to strike Crimea, with long-range HIMARS artillery and Storm Shadow missiles, according to a report from Russia’s TASS news agency. “The use of HIMARS and Storm Shadow missiles outside the special operation zone will mean the full involvement of the United States and Great Britain in the conflict,” Shoigu said, adding that Russia will retaliate.
