Conflict in West Darfur: El-Geneina is the ‘worst place in the world’

Refugees and aid groups say the fighting in Darfur is less about the battle between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces than it is an existential war between communities in the region. Masalit leaders report that militias are targeting their tribe, in particular, and some refugees are describing the persecution in el-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, as a genocide. ‘Most fearless’ fighting in Sudan after 24-hour ceasefire ends

Fighting has resumed with renewed intensity following a brief period of respite on Saturday, the quietest since Sudan broke out into conflict nearly eight weeks ago when a rivalry between the army and its rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) exploded into open warfare.
