As pleas for a ceasefire in Gaza grow louder, there is a palpable sense of urgency at the United Nations. Two more resolutions to end Gaza violence fail at UN Security Council

The United Nations Security Council has again failed to take action on the Israel-Hamas conflict despite a deepening humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza. Russia and China on Wednesday vetoed a United States resolution that called for a humanitarian pause to allow humanitarian aid access, the protection of civilians and a stop to arming Hamas and other armed groups in the Gaza Strip. A rival text put forward by Moscow then failed to draw sufficient support. The US had toned down an initial draft released over the weekend after diplomats expressed shock at its failure to recognise the humanitarian crisis and its bold statement that Israel had a […]

UN chief says ‘clear violations of international humanitarian law’ in Gaza

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has renewed his demand for a ceasefire in Gaza and said that international law was being violated in the war between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas. Israel has bombarded the besieged Gaza Strip relentlessly since October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killling at least 1,400 people according to Israeli authorities. Speaking before the 15-member UN Security Council on Tuesday, Guterres pleaded for civilians to be protected and warned that the fighting risked a wider conflagration in the region. Guterres also criticised Israel without naming it, saying, “protecting civilians does not mean ordering more than one million people to […]

UN Security Council to open debate on Gaza war

The United States has finalised its United Nations Security Council resolution. It calls for all measures necessary such as ‘humanitarian pauses’ and allows for ‘humanitarian access to Gaza’. A key sticking point has been the call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas – which does not appear in the US resolution. It is not yet clear when the Security Council will vote on the resolution although it is understood that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will attend the UN meeting on Wednesday. This is the third draft resolution issued since the conflict began. Previous ones by Russia and Brazil were vetoed. Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo joins us live […]
