An experimental Alzheimer’s drug has been shown to slow significantly the cognitive and functional decline linked to the disease in results hailed as “remarkable” by experts, despite some patients experiencing serious side effects. United States pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly announced on Wednesday that in a late-stage trial of nearly 1,200 people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, the drug, donanemab, slowed the progression of symptoms by 35 percent over a period of 18 months compared with a placebo. The US and Russia have held what they say are frank talks as they try to resolve their standoff on Ukraine. But the discussions have failed to find a breakthrough. For many Ukrainians, the build-up of Russian troops at the border has echoes of 2014, when war came to the east. After 9/11, United States President George W. Bush launched a ‘global war on terror.’ Within weeks, the Taliban was toppled for providing safe haven for Al al-Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden. In May 2011, US Special forces killed Osama bin Laden in neighbouring Pakistan. As the war continued, diplomatic efforts to reach a settlement intensified. In 2013, the Taliban opened an office in Qatar at the US’s request, but it wasn’t until 2020 that a peace deal was reached under the Trump Administration. President Joe Biden stuck to the agreement and ordered a full withdrawal of troops. More than 2,300 US troops and at least 35,000 Afghan civilians have died […]
US President Donald Trump has ordered the withdrawal of most American troops from Somalia, the defence department said in a statement on Friday, a move that is part of a global pullback of US forces before Trump leaves office next month. The Pentagon has not said how many US personnel will stay in Somalia to train and advise local forces. But critics say the withdrawal could not come at a worse time, with fighting in neighbouring Ethiopia and upcoming elections in Somalia. Purdue Pharma, which makes the powerful painkiller, OxyContin, is set to plead guilty to criminal charges as part of an $8.3bn settlement for helping trigger an opioid crisis in the United States. Purdue Pharma has admitted it paid doctors and pharmacists to prescribe OxyContin widely, sometimes without a valid medical reason. But some state prosecutors say the company has got off lightly and the agreement does not hold it fully accountable for setting off an addiction epidemic that has killed more than 400,000 Americans in the last 20 years. China has dismissed a US report about its increasing nuclear capabilities as “biased and dishonest”. The US Department of Defense says China is planning to double the number of its nuclear warheads in the next 10 years. But, even if that happens, experts say that will just be a fraction of what the US has in its arsenal.
