Why can’t America solve its homelessness crisis?

A lack of affordable housing is contributing to an increasingly visible homeless crisis in the United States, prompting cities like New York and Los Angeles to declare emergencies. The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation known as Freddie Mac estimates the country needs an additional 3.8 million housing units. Homeless shelters overflow in many places and that means those with criminal records and mental health issues are more likely to end up on the streets. US homeless crisis escalates as rent prices rise

In the United States, and in California, there is increasing alarm over the number of over-fifties who find themselves living on the streets. They make up most of the more than half a million people there who are homeless. Many have been forced from their homes because they are unable to pay large increases in their rent.
