US President-elect Donald Trump has confirmed he is prepared to declare a national state of emergency as part of a mass deportation of migrants. Writing on his Truth Social platform, he responded to reports that he was considering the use of military assets. Trump has pledged to deport what he calls “foreign criminals” who have entered the US illegally. He made immigration a core issue in his successful bid for the White House. Hundreds of Honduran migrants who entered Guatemala in hopes of making their way to the United States have been taken back to their country’s border. Guatemalan authorities say many of the Honduran nationals have returned to their country voluntarily. But some say they plan to continue northward to their final destination.
