People have died while trapped in their cars as the toll grows from the deep freeze gripping the United States. There have been at least 30 fatalities across several states, including deadly accidents on icy roads. Officials have warned that the death count could rise with motorists trapped in their vehicles in and around Buffalo in New York state. Twelve have died in the state — one of the worst-hit regions — and in Buffalo, people have been confined to their homes for several days. The Indian government is building the last of four major tunnels in Indian-administered Kashmir. Officials say this, one of Asia’s longest tunnels, will be the country’s longest. The tunnels are intended to connect areas that are usually cut off during the winter snows and come as part of India’s effort to beef up development near its border with China.
