Bangladesh has officially opened its longest bridge, linking the capital, Dhaka, and the southwest. The nearly $4bn project suffered cost overruns and delays after the World Bank pulled funding following allegations of corruption. The bridge was eventually funded domestically and built by China. Lebanon’s government is failing its people, the United Nations has said. The UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, Olivier De Schutter, says the Lebanese government is failing its population. He spent the last two weeks assessing the government’s response to the economic crisis. De Schaffer blamed the authorities for plunging the country into poverty.
