Everyone know this will be the biggest company for computer chips within few years. China is the largest market, and China is now the largest industrial power by far. When US cannot even produce face masks.
SMIC are not “very far behind”, they are producing fine chips at 14nm and will start 7nm production this year.
US tech are becoming more unreliable. Companies using US tech are not reliable. So all conditions are good for SMIC, and will therefor be the leading semiconductor company in short time. Big capital powers know this and will have a peace of the pie.
Still a long way to go, SMIC doesnt have EUV technology. Producing 7nm with the current machines they have is like washing a car using a toy water gun while TSMC is washing cars with high pressure water jet.
The only way China can breakthrough is converting to carbon base processing chips. The technology is there but the manufacturing technique is not there yet. Another technical difficulty in realising carbon based chip manufacturing is the purity of carbon nanotubes.
We should all have confidence that China will overcome because silicon base chip is coming to an end. The physical limit of it stands at 1nm
@Sun Wu TSMC didn’t build its own machines. It bought them, SMIC could have just bought them too but given the US acting like a bully, it forced the Dutch NOT to seel it to them.
Oh well, There are Chinese companies that are working on their own machines. They’re a long way off, but they’re growing really fast so let’s see what happens
@Ceres Station China have no shortage of capital to deploy to build the technologies to needed to support the entire chip design and manufacturing supply chain. The US actions will just force that move and investment more quickly. The main issue is the position of Huawei which has a lead in 5G anyway. If SMIC can give them 7nm in 2021 that should keep them going.
The work on 5g is mostly already completed. They can now do R&D on the next gen 6g. And what better place to start than to pioneer all the elements of that technology from scratch. Trump is Making China Great Again. China companies were too cozy with semicon supplies from US that it’s own semicon industry development was too slow with so much capex but so little volume. This cut-off by Trump is pushing Huawei toward SMIC and China govn pumping money hasten their development. In the long run it will be US loss when the sheer volume of Chinese semicon industry production and R&D will see China overtaking US just like they overtook US in areas like 5G & AI.

If you talk to people in the US you can easily spot the fools by asking them if they think tariffs are paid by a Chinese or US citizens. They think being “tough” on China is helping a China but they don’t realize they are decimating their semi-conductor industry, jobs are not coming back from China because essentially then they will be competing against the scale of China’s manufacturing which cannot be beat, and the tariffs are being paid by us, not China. So a fail on almost all fronts for Trump. He only gets away with it because he can fool the masses here

While the western media are busy spinning stories to vilify China and belittling Huawei and SMIC, they overlooked one major fact. Silicon semiconductor is reaching its technology hard limit. Printing a 5nm track on an array of 0.2nm silicon atom is becoming an art than science. TSMC seems to have mastered the art while Samsung is still struggling with 5nm. My money will be on Huawei and/or SMIC already working on an alternate technology to Si that will leap frog TSMC in a very near future. Meanwhile, how hard is it for Huawei and/or SMIC to attract talents from across the Straits?
