What other cities can learn from Hong Kong’s transport system
One of the world’s biggest cities, Hong Kong has more shopping malls per square kilometre than any other.
With its heavily dense population, the city relies substantially on its rail network.
Al Jazeera’s Sarah Clarke reports on the city’s advanced transport system, which is seen as a model for others to follow.

Transit-oriented development is need of the hours to live sustainably I hope developing countries like India to learn from it.
zs Xie i think ur the citizen of India u have more information about India my bro plz go nd watch how india is developing
We do have a lot of Rapid Transit rails in india and we built thev worlds first fully solar powered airport a few years ago
Callistine Lewis great airport BTW. chinese needs thanks indian, for purchased Made in China solar panels. And also american needs thanks indian for equipped their SCADA Systems.
India has subway systems in all its major cities.
The news I hear from India is usually about derailed trains. And the entire world has a picture of those trains with people sitting on top of them too. So, be less proud and take example from developed system.
second.
See this Philippine government? My bad, I know you’re blind.
Jose Mari Oñate yes sure your gov can do that but will you want to live in tiny condo and your expense sky high like rocket will you?
If a high rate of 32% tax and low personal income, then we’re experiencing that everyday.
The only way to compensate us is to have an efficient public transportation system that runs all throughout the metro and at least the country, but right now, that fund is being used to build houses…. for their families and relatives. And if there’s one, it would be a long, long time to plan and to discuss from corporations for their wealth.
HK has the same money as the Philippines.. has 8 million people
Philippines has 109 million people to serve with the same money that HK has
Hong Kong is a great city in the world…
@open defecation some parts of Mumbai are cool but city is dirty and has slums
@open defecation India is a great place to visit with fascinating cultures but its cities are, to be frank not the greatest compared to other East Asian cities… It might be developing at a stunning pace but try cleaning up the slums and improving the hygiene, infrastructure before you make that comment seriously. Indian cities have a higher crime rate than other east Asian 1st tier cities so why don’t you keep your nationalist biased ideas in your brain before making the comment to not be taken as a joke.
Cough cough chinese meddling cough cough
Hong kong sucks
until the riots made it too dangerous
By the way today is Norways national day
Allahu will bless Great Norway. peace
Real Truth Of Somalia Sweetest nation on the earth. ending conflicts on earth. Long live Norway.
I would love to visit Norway one day💞 from New Zealand
nah….even bkk has excellent mrt and subway more modern than hk coz its newer…manila lrt2 is excellent as well…so its not a big deal and hk mrt is just normal..nothing special about it
Philippine is a failed country.period
enrico contreras araneta Philippne trains are better than Hong Kong’s world class MTR? Hong Kong’s MTR is the most efficient in the world with a 99.99% on time rate. Being one of the cleanest, it has malls connected to the stations. If you think Shenzhen metro is good, it’s becuase the metro is operated by Hong Kong’s MTR. MTR operates trains in London, Sweden, Australia, Mainland China, etc. You know MTR is the best when New York’s MTA ceo Jay Walder was forced to resign just after 2 years when he left MTA for MTR. Are you seriously comparing this with the Philippines? I’m sure Philippines has a great system, but COME ON MAN
enrico contreras araneta Shenzhen is not an average city anymore. It is known as the Silicon Valley of the east by New York Times etc. Although, Hk is definately better still.
By the way, Shenzhen’s metro is built by Hong Kong’s MTR, it’s even operated by Hong Kong’s MTR.
Lol the subway in Bangkok is very inefficient and the buses are plainly horrible, the Manila metro is basically broken and takes you to nowhere. The MTR in Hong Kong is fast, clean and very extensive. I could literally take the MTR in all directions of the city without any hassle. Try comparing an actual sustainable metro system with the MTR the next time you comment
It looks so similar to Singapore’s MRT…
Similar circumstances, small space with a lot of people.
mtr was first. mrt 2nd 🙂
singapores mtr is built by hk
MRT trains typically have fewer cars (3 or 6), compared to 8 or 12 on the MTR, but the cars are about the same size
the MTR built it first
LOL! AMAZIGH!! (BERBER) 0:06
The Mtr is very good indeed.
Is the HK MTR fully private or does it receive money from the government?
@Jay Alan Also, MTR own a lot of property above the stations (which is very expensive in Hong Kong)

HK MTR *gives* money to the government. The company itself is super profitable.
singapore needs this
trent8002003 We didn’t choose our boss in the first place. My first passport has Coats of Arm on it and suddenly everyone got a new passport with a toilet seat on it. No one had a say. What sort of relation does the northern rulers have with HK? And now you are telling me to leave my home?
@trent8002003 You can’t tell the people from Hong Kong to leave their own home when they had no say on how their future will be back in 1997
FYI, HK is already back to China. Look at your SAR passport!
As a Hong Konger, I have to say Singapore’s MRT is pretty awesome too.
@trent8002003 I never said that Hong Kong is not a part of China, what I’m saying is that the people in Hong Kong had no say on what was in the joint Sino~British declaration so whatever political issues there is in there, its not the peoples fault
every city in the world needs a metro
Seattle should take notes!!!
I remember taking the metro only once just before they closed it. I miss Seattle.
I think that the MTR should learn how to build railway without delay
Did you know that MTR has almost the fewest delays in the world and MTR renowned as a role model for many countries? MTR operates a lot of railways in Britain, Sweden and Australia.
fcfhkmelb no ! MTR new line project like shatin to central line has already delayed for 2years. And the press has already unraveled the scandal of this line : the construction company destroyed the papers that proves they jerry-built in order to catch up on the schedule !
Learning from mistake???
Did you know Sydney is adopting the model of MTR? The Sydney north-west rail is built by MTR. The idea of having high density housing around Sydney’s train stations are actually brought from Hong Kong. Didn’t you notice a high rise boom in Sydney’s suburbs? It’s the result of learning from Hong Kong.
HK’s metro system is indeed excellent. The mainland has gotten the message too…… the Shenzhen Metro system is very similar to HK and also very efficient.
JJJ J Shenzhen metro is operated my Hong Kong’s MTR
That accent
Urban transportation system determines the demand and pricing of real estate properties.
Our Great Britain Rail far better Greater then this rubish China made rail
Hong Kong MTR operates trains in London, Sweden and Australia too. London Overground and Crossrail are run by MTR. Hong Kong is a former British colony. MTR was founded by British government and it has a British management background. The majority of its fleets are British-made although they are slowly being phased out after 30 years of running.
N Xarigow The British Rail is a joke
1:20 I was anticipating a comedy cartoon style trip and tumble here……
This model is successful only because of the unreasonably high property price….
the rail line rises to property prices thus letting the MTR pocket the deference in rent rate when they bought the land versus after it’s value has been improved by there train.
why can’t fox provide such pieces …..oh right their not a news channel
Look at China for inspiration TODAY.
SEAN PAN why. hk obviously influenced china. why not get influenced by the actual influencer?
Hong Kong has only been part of China since 1997 and has long been a successful city before that time. Even nowadays Hong Kong is still running as if it’s a separate country from China. Yes Hong Kong is politically part of China but is culturally, legally and economically different from China. Ignorant, stupid people tend to associate Hong Kong with China.
That’s how they make lots of money
Transit fares under a dollar? So? The pay in Hong Kong is abysmal, and it’s under a dollar if you are close by.
Granted the MTR is one of the best in the world, but the statement about cheap fares is completely misleading and missing the point.
Abysmal pay and most Hong Kong working class can afford an iPhone easily… look at Taiwan and you know what’s meant by abysmal pay. People in Taiwan cannot afford an iPhone without some serious financial planning.
Professionals in Hong Kong are paid very well, on par with Australia and the US.
It is under a dollar if you call Euros or US Dollars, but it’s pretty cheap when compared to other metro systems. I use less than 3HKD (0.4? British pounds) for a journey to my school.
and the best, low tax rate.
“The MTR is considered gold standard for transit management worldwide. It’s for that reason it’s now being emulated by other cities around the world.”
Is that so? What cities are those? What stupid advertisement is that? Are there actually other cities that do this? I call bullsh*t on this!
Many cities have mentioned about investigating to adopt this model. MTR is the operator or consultant of many railways in the world. London Overground, London Crossrail, Stockholm Metro and Melbourne Metro are operated by MTR.
I love Hong Kong greetings from Mexico 🙂
I used to study in CUHK and is an amazing City and MTR is perfect!
going down the escalator backwards with skill
99.9 reliability .he said
this asians are good at figuring out things.
Malaysia needs this
Lol Melbourne needs this if any city
Bangalore: “Am I a joke to you?”
Singapore can & must learn from they since we have so many break down !!!
Singapore is world-class city, except for its metro..which is built on third world standard
@kenlau135 I have been to Singapore. I don’t understand why you would call it metro with third country standards. It is one of the best metro system in the world.
@anonymous1 7 the system breaks down all the time and killed some before.
@kenlau135 But the reliability is still very high and it is getting better again. Also the North South line has improved a lot. I think singapore mrt can do better but it is definitely not a third country system. mrt still preforms better than a most metro system in the developed world are not as reliable as the mrt few systems do better seoul does it very well. The mrt is also very cheap.
Hong Kong’s MTR is NOT first railway company, that used diversification tactic. Wanna a first railway company, who used this tactic? Check out Osaka’s Hankyu Railway. To compete with other many railways, it literally builded up mountainous areas and builded department shops (to addition, spa and other things) to increase its ridership. And, Hankyu Railway quickly became famous, with its maroon colour.
Dont get me wrong, MTR is really great, and it tries to increase its influence. Im just trying to remove misconception.
But as a Hong Konger, I think Hong Kong metro sucks.
Because Hong kong people never treasures everything what they have.
hongkong mtr is the best even singapore’s mrt learn from them
Of course having one monopoly to plan for your entire living is a good idea. Check how happy are those people living in these thoroughly planned urban castles, with malls dominated by retail conglomerates, forcing everybody to buy high-end products even if they don’t need to.
New York you suck!!!
香港大地铁世
Sydney Trains. Learn from Hong Kong.
Huh? They are usually on time and very modern, quiet, comfortable and efficient. The metro is getting built.
Every major city in the US
Number A and Number 2 haha
You know the metro system is top notch when it blends into your lifestyle without you noticing it and even having high expectations for it.Not having it in your region isn’t a reasonable excuse to be salty.
1:11 that’s dangerous lol
The US is # 1 in terms of the sum of railroad tracks in term of miles.
So the world is copying China.
Hong Kong is second only to Japan.
MTR now has business in following regions: HK, Macau, Beijing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, London (and SW part of the UK), Sydney, Melbroune, Stockholm
I don’t know how you compare. Hong Kong MTR is super easy to use and you can’t beat its efficiency. When you say Japan, do you mean Tokyo? The system there is bigger but is harder to use and very confusing to visitors.
MTR now has business in following regions:
HK, Macau, Beijing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, London (and SW part of the UK), Sydney, Melbroune, Stockholm
When you can get from home to work without ever stepping outside…
Jesus christ im crying here in nyc
There is a huge room for improvement in MRT in Thailand. From expanding areas MRT covers in the city and convenient cards like octopus card (which we doesn’t have).
Smart
Hong Kong’s public transport is simple the best in the world. No other cities come even close. Not even Singapore or Tokyo.
The only thing Toronto learned from MTR is to include an airport railway service
