Thousands of people living near a volcano on the Caribbean island of St Vincent have fled on boats after an eruption.
Experts are warning of more explosions, and cruise ships have offered to take people to nearby islands.

@SA Inja woof It is true. That’s what the Prime Minister has been reiterating. People here have been reluctant to take the vaccine with only 11,000 being vaccinated before the eruption. They were also told they have to be vaccinated to go into one of the shelters.

@High Priestess Angelique that’s not the law where? In St. Vincent, Grenada, Barbados, USA? As stated by @Teachah Karen, it’s what the Prime Minister was relaying to the people. It’s what all the surrounding islands have all been informed and agreed to. Each island has its own Covid safety protocol. Although most are similar, and require vaccination. There are other methods to leave the island, people will just not be allowed to enter other countries. Something was mentioned, about a cruise ship staying out at sea as a quarantine facility.
It’s my understanding that the cruise liners and the receiving governments are insisting on vaccination.

My heart goes out to the wonderful people of St. Vincent. I visited this beautiful island 20 years ago and wanted to stay. The stunning nature, friendly and warm people, wanted me to move there and stay forever. I truly hope everyone will be safe and not much damage will happen.

The BBC in particular has all but ignored this news .I get that the nation is mourning the loss of the Queen’s husband…but St Vincent is a part of Commonwealth of which the Queen is head. Governments with their military and police forces should be prepared to assist their nationals in crisis as they are paid by taxpayers …..duties of a government

Thanks for your concern. We have a police force, no military. The government and citizens are working together to do the best we can with what we have. Some persons refused to heed the warning to evacuate and so were stranded. Others were stranded because of our hilly terrain which results in there being only one road in and out of some areas.
Ain’t the government of other countries problem. Why should other countries taxpayers pay for their problems.

It’s not the first eruption in St Vincent. However, what you need to understand is that this is a small island (mainland) of 150 square miles. So the entire island is in danger. There’s only a small area considered the safety zone and even then it’s still in harms way.

That’s not what’s happening and you know it. People not vaccinated stay in the unaffected portion of the island, in the south. Others who are vaccinated and therefore can travel are being put on ships or travelling to surrounding islands. People need help, why would you make things more complicated by lying?
