The U2 spy plane flys at 70,000 ft (13 miles) and the pilots wear fully pressurized flight suits and helmets made by the same company that makes NASA suits. This allegedly went to 280,000 ft (53 miles) and not one person other than the two pilots had oxygen. The Karman line “space” is 62 miles or 327,360 ft. Did they fly into “space” or not? Seems to me they were 9 miles short of what’s considered space.

I don’t know about the details of the U2 but
a) they decided that it is easier to let the pilots wear a pressure suite instead of building a fully pressurized cockpit
b) they only were it for emgercency cases.
Astronauts in the ISS also don’t wear pressure suits. And the astronauts in a rocket who fly to the ISS only wear them in case of emergency during launch and landing. There was a tragic accident in 1971:

The astronauts did not wear pressure suits but there was a malfunction in the craft. Since then also russian astronauts wear suits and oxygen.

US definiton is 50 miles. However, all definitons are more or less arbitrary anyway and don’t really matter. The atmosphere becomes thinner fluently.

Well, just read the description of the Mig 29 video: Up to 19 km. That is really audicious to call that “edge of space”. Richard Branson here was at 86 km. And even there many people say it is not space, because the international definition is 100 km as the beginning of space.

Correction; They went to the “EDGE” of space and not above Apogee into space. This was more of a freefall in my opinion. If you want a real space adventure, hitch a ride on a space shuttle.
They went to space by the US definition. (80 km). And yes, of course it was a free fall. But that would also be the case if he would get higher. But obviously many people think of “orbit” when they hear “space”.
