thats where flood defenses fail, if someone upstream has defenses it pushes the problem on.. in this case nieghbouring country. flood defenses need coordinating on the conteninent in future. also flood defenses must be continually improved upon as the water table rises. consider also having a strong pile foundation on new buildings near rivers in planning laws. increase drainage sizes instead of using the old diameters from 50 years ago. rip those who lost there lives i hope europe learns lessons from this and adds flood defenses on future agendas. 🙇♂️

Fortunately the storm passed and the rivers are receding. Unfortunately it is now battering South Germany and Austria. Same level of devastation.

I’m from germany and have friends living in that area and am in contact
with many people trying to help, to organize food or cloth or other
things needed for the people. Farmers from all over the country driving
100s of miles with their machines to the flooded regions. No one is
there for help from officials! The private people cleaning up their
citys and carrying the dead out of the houses. There is no such thing as
Bundeswehr or the THW who is helping.
Helpers and fireworkers
from outside that region are sent away by the officals…. it’s
unbelievable what is going on there…. the help of the people organised
with private money is SABOTAGED by the officials !!!

I think this is the result of cutting down forests which had deep roots to prevent mud sliding & flooding and in their place planting fodder plants for meat farm animals.
Reforestation in denuded forest area to prevent mud sliding & absorb rain water and digging ponds and lakes at strategic points for storage of rain water will reduce future flooding to a great extent.
I heard there were encroachments in the river bed. Such encroachments have to be removed and should not be approved by government

The Netherlands closed their water system, so the water backed up and went back towards Germany in that area. I think the Germans better come up with a better system for their cities or else more devastation to come. Sorry for the tremendous loss of life, human and animal (domestic) and property destruction as well. This will cost billions, I do not know if they will succeed in rebuilding if more rains like this will continue to come.

My country, Honduras, had catastrophic floods last year. Some of my students lost everything. Thankfully, the area where I live hasn’t been prone to floods for as long as I’ve lived. I feel sorry for the people who have been affected by tragedies like this recently. May the Lord put everything in place for these people to receive the help they need.

most of the houses in D are built of stone, concrete and steel, only the roof trusses are made of wood. Accordingly, the wood consumption is kept within limits.
