@sin Mc my experience on the ground tells me the answer is No Go. take city Shanghai for example, people don’t worry about 3 meals. but ask around if anyone wants western democracy. it would very much disappoint you. Chinese people compare their system with those liberal system. the well established western powers have to be able to show they are productive, efficient and respond to its voters calls and able to plan for the future. they cannot just say they are legitimate for granted because they win elections but do nothing or unable to act. I think the only way to move Chinese people to liberal direction is that the western liberal do better.

You may not hear much about the changes. But as a Chinese, I can feel the change on the ground. Let’s say “freedom of speech” “freedom of movement”, many Westerners may think this hasn’t been changed since the CCP nation was established in 1949. that is very untrue. I couldn’t imagine if the level of freedom in China were at the same level as what we were 10 years ago.
I always believe that freedom is a human feeling like oxygen and water. People would fight or die for it if important ones were taken away. no exceptions for the Chinese. freedom isn’t a religious belief scripted in God’s book as 1,2,3. no one can define people’s feeling. the demands and the priority for freedom items are different from people to people, from nation to nation. One thing I find it very interesting. surveillance system for example. this is unthinkable in the Western society if they did the same in their society. but this is widely supported from Chinese people. we have absolutely no problem with it. it has helped a lot to safeguard the people. but on the other hand, it is unthinkable to see the level of gun crime in US society. Gun right is totally unacceptable in Chinese mindset. again, no good and bad. this is just different thinking. We think everyone entitle to have freedom in order to live comfortably in society, but we also think we should give up some freedom so that our society can be well managed to better achieve our common goals such as faster development, fighting pandemic, fighting natural disaster, be able to quickly deliver results and much more. We all know that it almost certainly come with price. There isn’t an absolute free society. freedom is a scale, not yes or no answer.

If the chosen one only claims his/her legitimacy to sit on the high chair, but not capable or due to whatever reason in their political atmasphere blocking his/her from delivering results like what we have seen for decades – poor national infrastructure, endless debate/fightings without actions, even they finally acted, but it got turned down 4 or 8 years later, waging endless wars overseas, inability to handle crisis like Covid, no long term plans – to me, this is key reason for manufacturing sector to leave the country because their politics only serves the capitals. There is no possibility of China’s population shrinking to 700 million people over the next 20 years, unless you are talking of a nuclear war taking place before then. You are talking of a 50% reduction in population over the next 20 or even 40 years!!
