Argentina is due to make a payment on its $45bn debt to the International Monetary Fund. But many Argentinians want to see a freeze on repayments as the country suffers a rise in hunger, poverty and rampant inflation.

@Franky Yes I would agree to an extent. However, I would say that the IMF should have stopped loaning money to Argentina earlier (leading up to the crisis in 2001 at least). It was irresponsible of them to keep lending money when it became clear Argentina would not be able to pay it back.

Argentina borrowed money from the IMF and mismanaged it. Now the debts are due, but the returns from the loans are nonexistent. The people, instead of blaming their leaders for losing the money are blaming the IMF. I don’t understand the concept of borrowing money from someone, blaming the person lending to you for your problems, then refusing to pay them back? Is this really acceptable in Argentina?
That’s a common way to interpret economics in the Third World: no loans, but perpetual charity.

Nationalization of oil and subsequent mismanagement of it doomed Argentina. It tried to pretend everything was great after nationalization by massive overspending but it couldn’t keep it going forever and made things so much worse than it would have been with sensible management and spending.
