Long-term happiness > Short term pleasures
Although it is sometimes good and even necessary to give in to your natural and animalistic impulses. The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it and there is nothing wrong with it. Trying to suppress your feelings and impulses will only harm you mentally. So never resist, just do it and realize there’s no such thing as “right” or “wrong” (unless you break the law of course), only good decisions and bad decisions and only judgmental people and open-minded people.
Human beings have essentially been ‘hacked’ – we simply can’t resist this short content. Few have the discipline to stay away. Even if it is bad for society, I can’t see an alternative where people are hooked on this stuff. Anyone have any solutions?

I feel like a kid again, when i don’t use electronic devises a whole day. It’s like traveling back in time and it’s super calm and beautiful.
I don’t mind because I know I can get off it, I don’t NEED it. I am trying to accomplish something right now so I’m on it all the time and I feel a litttle bit wired these days, but I can be without it and be totally happy.

I find it very disturbing that I can’t disable shorts, and almost instinctually scroll up with the right amount of force and get to the shorts bar, watch half an hour and not even realise

Actually dopamine isn’t as much a molecule of reward, it’s a molecule of pursuit, wether that be long term or short term. Dopamine doesn’t care what your goals are, it only cares that you reach them.

In future – the most important skill is to Know yourself better – in order not to be manipulated by algorithms (starting from Instagram and ending with Amazon)🙏
The constant amount of content and rapid notifications is actually very detrimental. It provides a lot of benefits, but our brains are not made to receive this constant stimulation all day long, and what ends up happening is that our “defense” mechanism gets trained to be on constant high alert. We process more information in a week than a 1400s person living in mid-renaissance Italy would in their entire lifetime.

It’s really difficult to get rid of that need of dopamine rush. Perhaps it’s more about changing small things in our everyday life. Wee seek dopamine to avoid other emotions. Having more quality time would definitely make it easier, but then… it’s like addiction… spending time on social media is easier and time goes by quickly. Anyways, great video 😊

I couldn’t agree more. There are so many rabbit holes to get sucked into on social media. I’ve been trying to limit my intake as well. I’m going to try your advice on the notifications, as I was watching this video I had at least 5 notifications come across my screen….it’s getting ridiculous.
Nate is probably the best role model nearly any of us can have. He’s young, financially stable, has built a media empire, and is traveling on his owns terms. My dream life in a nut shell. No attachments so that he can enjoy the real, important things in life.

I agree about short form content.
I feel more accomplished after watching a 2 hour movie or documentary than I do spending 2 hours on Instagram
I believe part of this is because long form content gives your brain time to process the ideas of the content where as short form content you “get” the concepts but never fully understand them enough to apply them.

Really great video Nate. You gave us a lot to think about. I downloaded tiktok when it first became popular. I use to spend hours on there scrolling. My comments on video use to get a few thousand likes. It made me feel good for a while but then I realised it was taking over my life. I was putting off important tasks. I deleted it a long time ago. Honestly, I wish I had your wisdom when I was your age

Yeah I also feel like when watching a lot of short form content makes me not feel the best. If I watch a little and get out of it I feel fine but If I sit there and scroll for 10, 20, 30, 50 minutes and beyond is when I feel crappy.
Great video. I will try to put some of your advice into practice. I think IOS and Android platforms and getting sucked into the never ending digital world and constant notifications is unhealthy and a habit I am trying to reduce with small steps. I can relate aswell to the urge for video games knowing in the long term it wasn’t the best way to spend my time.

I have a question. It is kind of personal so I’d understand if you don’t want to answer. This has nothing to do with money but more with you as an individual. In one of you videos you said that in your teens you decided that you’d make sure you don’t have to introduce yourself to all these people you wanted to get mentored by so you started working on your persona and your personal brand. What’s kind of interesting and a little contradictory (I may be wrong) to me is that, at the same time, you seem to be someone who values his privacy and independence so here comes my question, were you ever hesitant about working on your personal brand (with your name and everything) because of the possibility of being so known that you might eventually lose your privacy and independence because of how popular/famous you’d become? I think you get what I’m saying.

Totally agree on all the points against short content. Discovered this myself and limited it consuming almost to zero.
I especially wanted to say how great your b-rolls are. And I love how you’re not trying to cut them really fast like many YouTubers. The watching is so enjoyable because of this.
I use Block Youtube feed and Hide Youtube likes and dislikes as a way of blocking things in the newsfeed on Youtube as a chrome extension.
The reason why anyone feels guilty afterward is because it’s difficult to remember any of it and it becomes a feeling of time wasted.

I feel a bit tricked by this video. You deleted short content from your life, and call that a dopamine detox? That’s a stretch. And there is ample science to support that a lowering of dopamine thresholds in our bodies by abstaining does in fact help for mood, concentration, happiness.
