@Farzana 🇺🇸 Biden said weeks before that Russia will attack and did share a lot of what Putin will do. So the West came together and smashed the Russian economy and turned Russia into a pariah state within days.

Great point. He completely ignored the context of the war. He is normally pretty good at presenting historical context and critical thinking. Sounds to me like he is helping build the ‘required’ narrative.
Cause the Russian forces cannot go all out on attack because the civilians are putting up s fight and also at the same Russian forces giving the civilians time to flee or surrender.

Niall Ferguson is wrong of course…Russia has for all practical purposes, lost this war already…they just haven’t quit or left yet. There is no credible military analyst which now believes Russia can occupy or control Ukraine.
nonsense, how much does a guerrilla war cost, with western support, the Ukrainians can continue this fight for as long as they want. this is about their future way of life, the way of life for their children and grandchildren. Besides, it is not that difficult since you are facing Russians not the Germans or Japanese during ww2, they could win this war simply by not giving up
Not really you have to remember Russia is far more ruthless than anyone else. They if they wanted to could wipe Urkraine off the map.
Stalin age Soviets were much more ruthless, but after WWII with more than 800k army on the ground in Ukraine alone and growing till mid 1950s, it took them more than 10 years to finish guerrilla war in Ukraine (20-200k variable strong throughout the period). The difference was, Ukrainian guerrilla army had no support from outside, the population of Ukraine was sovieticized and was exhausted by decades of red terror and genocidal famines. Nowadays the entire population is extremely motivated to fight and ideologically united around the idea of freedom. There’s probably around 1.5 mil armed Ukrainians at the moment (army + civilians) and even more willing to take arms. If West decides to support the resistance Russia won’t survive guerrilla war of that scale.

The idea of having Ukraine join NATO is the source of the problem. Seems like the people that speak here don’t understand the purpose of NATO. I agree with Niall that escalation and military responses are not the solution. Putin’s speech a few weeks ago explained why he invade: the US has been threatening Russia in Ukraine. Time to try diplomacy. See the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Budapest and Minks deals [neutrality cease fire] and the clinton and dubya declarations that they will extend Nato to the east.

I can recall at least 4 senior figures (including 2 retired senior generals) in the US asserting that Ukraine can hold out, provided Ukraine is supplied with appropriate arms in sufficient quantities. I have not seen any journalist nor current affairs presenter allege this. I am neither a soldier (like they) nor an historian (like Mr Ferguson) but I would have thought that retired senior generals would have carried more sway than an historian, no matter what his calibre.

The US plan now that they have failed to convince Europe and other Nato countries to escalate this war to WW3 is now to pump an arsenal of weapons into Ukraine to fuel a civil conflict that will last for decades ,bankrupt Russia who will then abandon the struggle. They are more than prepared to fight Russia in Ukraine to THE LAST UKRANIAN. When Madeline Albright was told that sanctions against Iraq had cost the lives of 250,000 children she remarked : THAT WAS A PRICE WORTH PAYING”.
