Former six-time Grand Slam tennis champion Boris Becker has spent his first night in jail after being sentenced to two and a half years prison.
The 54-year-old German was found guilty of hiding millions of dollars worth of assets to avoid paying his bankruptcy debts.
Al Jazeera’s @Jonah Hull was at the court hearing in London.

Shoulda become an MP
Glory & victory Russia. 🇷🇺
All for nothing
Troll
Very good
Another thief… democracy
Becker was kicked out of Monaco for fraud and money laundering. He’s always been trash.
Well MP’s seem to get away it.
Maybe he can teach tennis to the inmates.
What chasing gold diggers does to men! No sympathy from me!
ridiculous. put bush, blair and netanyahu in prison first
Bush? One has died the father, the Son lives in a comfy retirement, and is a real nice guy! Wonderful man in fact!
Law of the land prevails
well okay.
The lowest a human can reach. What a disgrace?
Hardly the lowest, Really?
Bush and blair should start playing tennis maybe they will go to jail for killing 1 million iraqis.
Now he can play tennis in his jail cell.
Too much money ruins people
Not if you invest and spend it wisely
crazy
Put six million pounds in a high-interest account, and you can live more than comfortably on that interest, for the rest of your life.
When I saw elsewhere the headline “Boris going to jail for two years” I was far more excited.
They got the wrong Boris. The other Boris (Johnson) is still at large.
Lmao what???
And her present wife seems to contributing to his bankruptcy
Where did he hide the money? What will happen to it? Is it confiscated?
He’s got all the credentials to become a member of the Conservative cabinet
This guy used to have a heart rate of 36. His heart rate now..38 ?
Lock down as lock down
If you make 50 million dollars and end up like this you deserve everything coming your way.
Seriously!
@PW absolutely serious .my grandfather made .75 cents an hour and still took 6 kids out to eat and the drive in. That’s the trouble with folks nowadays,it’s called spoiled rotten.
Becker is not a Banker.
He definitely dropped the ball on this one. 🙂
Sad news, he’s a legend both as player and coach.
Stupid verdict
He received a suspended sentence in Germany for tax evasion after years of legal proceedings. He continued to show a reckless disregard for others by simply diverting money to be held in bankruptcy to his ex wives. He defaulted on 40 to 60 million of debt.
For his entire career he has been a strong advocate for the multicultural society and NEVER ever lived among those multicultural creatures. I hope he meets some of them in jail!!
@Cindyd D: But his girlfriend is African(from Sao Tomé)…
Have a good stay with the multicultural enrichment that moves to England these days. You apparently love them
Let me say this too the Parliament is stupid… especially those in the really big wigs.
why isn’t sunak in jail
This is no sad news, not one bit. He is a thief and a criminal. Now he has to answer for it. When someone evades tax and also hide their assets, then they are also purposely stealing from the poor. Basically giving the middle finger to everyone. He did the same thing in Germany, but fled before he could be prosecuted.
I remember him. He was a tennis legend in the 1980s
I m with you, Boris!!! may our Good Lord give you the strength to overcome this horrible moment. Live is tough for warriors
Grüße aus Deutschland lg umarmung danke
Very unfortunate to listen
He was and is still my ideal
A true legend.
Sentenced only because he was a German
😂😂😂👍👍👍👍
Sad n tragic end…I remember this legend….a hot tempered but great player playing during contemporary of Andreas Agassi Pete Sampras….may this Legend find peace n solitude while in lock up….hope u will get out soon but another Boris will go in🤣
Boom Boom Becker!
He really likes the black juices
I wonder, of all the other tennis players who are so vociferous about all social issues, how many helped one of their own with even 1 Dollar, I think ZERO 😭💲
