House Democrats introduced a draft proposal called the Puerto Rico Status Act which would allow Puerto Ricans to vote on the island’s political status. If passed, the bill would hold Congress to any binding result that Puerto Ricans move forward, including U.S. statehood.

#PuertoRico #Statehood #Politics
Don’t do it PUERTO RICANS.Fight to become a state like HAWAII instead not become independent ..They will leave you with nothing.
This an absolute waste of time! House Democrats are grabbing at straws because the know they are going to loose the midterms!
Yet probably what is next that AOC might say that Hawaii is better off under Chinese rule and that the US government should be like the Chinese government that everyone has access to everything.
THE REPUBLIC OF PUERTO RICO!!!!
how about we make puerto rico an organized incorporated territorie , that is way past due. in which it would make us constitution applied there, and leaves the door open to state hood.
May the people of Puerto Rico get whatever status they choose.
nah
@Tony Dracon elaborate please?
That’s the problem. Wealthy Puerto Ricans and Americans benefit from the state being in limbo
1898~2022 3 referendum and still no decision 🤷🏻♂️
Spain against the idea Always.
If become a state, then there would NOT be a Puerto Rico separate Ms. Universe, Olympic team, etc, etc, etc. Would have to compete against the other states
Not true…..even if it became a state. Culture and language determine national representation in the olympics.
I think we will be independent with free association to be honest
‘…as other US Citizens, rather’
Thank you.
I’m 70 a state sider and I retired to the island I’m pro state but I bet you I won’t get to see it in my lifetime. It’s always the carrot in front of the horse selling a bulshit Dream to the people.
The independent movement is good to keep everybody on edge but they’re full of s*** they love to hear themselves talk
Puerto Ricans have never had a chance to govern themselves Uncle Sam has forcefully made them totally dependent on the US it hasn’t even developed an agricultural industry that would sustain the islands needs no industry so what are they going to manufacture and now they’re going to eat s***.
We’re so far down the rabbit hole with Uncle Sam we might as well become a state(US Navy viet vet)
Interesting to note that this proposal makes full independence and independence with free association two separate decisions on the ballot…Assuming the result will be a simply plurality, are they splitting the separatist vote, thereby ensuring statehood? 🤔🤔
This bill calls for the referendum to happen on Nov 5th 2023, it includes a runoff referendum if none of the three options gets over 50%, then the two that got the most votes in the first referendum will be the only two options in the runoff referendum on March 3rd 2024. But that’s never going to happen, this bill if it even makes it past the house of Representative, it will die in the senate, both republican and democrat senators have said that they haven’t looked into PR’s status issue and even the ones that have thought about it, say they don’t bring it up because they know the majority of Puerto Ricans do not support statehood and that Puerto Ricans are very divided, so they don’t want to get involved and just say the same thing every politician says to dismiss the question when they are asked about PR status “the people of Puerto Rico should decide themselves”. Puerto Rico will never become a state and it never should, it would be detrimental to both the US and PR. And with the PPD Pro-status quo party in control of the whole government in Puerto Rico except for the governors office, they will reject this bill because it doesn’t include the status quo commonwealth option.
@JLM Well said 👍👍
@HergaDergaDonkeyKong 👍👍
I find it incredible that there is still colonialism in the 21st century and then AMERICA talks about ” freedom and democracy “.
@Kyle the thing they’re not understanding is if PR declares independence they would have to get passports. The enjoy easy flight from the US main land because it’s still America.
@John Warren having lived temporary there I can tell you it’s not the citizenship people covet. As it is the way it is they continue as a commonwealth as a necessity. The other options aren’t viable. Yet every 10 years or so they vote a referendum that goes nowhere. It’s easier however to point the finger at colonial imperialism rather than inwards towards corruption and conformity.
@Kyle they should just become a state.
@John Warren you gotta be Puerto Rican to want that any American doesn’t want our taxes to be paid to a foreign country with Spanish speakers when we speak English in USA whole language barrier also they have their own culture become independent like the island destiny to be lazy Jamaica figured it out Haiti is remaining till they figure they situation but didn’t sell out to the USA to make there choices
Independiente 🇵🇷
C’mon… we’ve been dealing with this since 1952! This is not going to resolve! We had plebiscites and it is always split in the middle between statehood and commonwealth! I really don’t care! Let’s just resolve the problem of corruption in our government, I think that is the most pressing issue. I’m also disgusted that vote phissing AOC wants to talk about PR’s problems! We are not your constituents! You don’t understand PR’s issues or problems! Go back to New York and help your own people. We, “real Puerto Ricans” can resolve our issues by our own!
Puerto Rico Is NOT USA. 🇵🇷
You can’t vote for independence! #FreePuertoRico
Why not just give them the right to vote in the general presidential election? That would change everything without having to even change the status.
That would be great!
@Orange Xylem yes I get that but citizens count is what I am saying. It should not matter where you are in the workd during election. If you can prove that you are a citizen, (which all Puerto Ricans are), then it should not matter. If you were on a month long vacation during election wouldn’t you want the option to still vote regardless of where you are located on election day? It really makes no sense other than oppression. I’m not blaming anyone now but then. The powers that be now must change that one thing and every thing else will follow in time.
@T.R. I agree, but there is no way 2/3 of states would ratify that to change the constitution. It would be infinitesimally easier to just vote for statehood if they want to be able to do that.
@Orange Xylem sadly I believe you are correct. Only time will tell.
👏👏👏👏
The 🌴island belongs to the gringos since lots of decades❗✍️
Who discover the island the ‘Gringos’ did
Entering THE SOUTHWEST OF GUANICA p.r 🇵🇷❗ 🔥🔥’FACTS’👊🏼😎🔥🔥
About tiime!!!!!
Ppl need to stop assuming that island Puerto Ricans are all Democrats. Here’s a glue, the Congresswoman is a Republican.
I don’t would not want puerto rico to become and state that means more money will be coming out our pockets and everything is expensive already tax is 11%
I pray it becomes a state so we could offer more help to them, I love Puerto Rico and some of the greatest loving people i have met have been from Puerto Rico! Praying for the best outcome
Yes America would totally offer them more help as they have held them against their will in the American State limbo for years not caring about anything but tourism
No we dont wanna lose our flag or our culture….thank you but No🇵🇷 Puerto Rico por siempre!
Thanks for your praying Joseph. I appreciate it but, what I would rather like to have is a fair and honest treat. Not called 2class USA citizen. In my heart I would love to see PR as an independent country. In my common sense thinking if PR become an independent country it will be a disaster.
You see, “los puertorriqueños” have got so used to receive all kind of monetary benefits than they got use to it.
Every time I go to a grocery store 8-10 pays with welfare money help. This is very sad and many people will argue with me on this but, this is the honest truth.
That been said the Continental USA should not take this in consideration. That’s nonsense, been puertorrican they can move to any state any time they want and that’s what is happening. Hopefully becoming a state and making it harder to get social benefits as it is in the rest of the country there could be a new habit behavior.
The reason congress reject the statehood is because they don’t see a high percentage on the past Pueblo cite (pueblecito) vote for statehood,if they don’t see over 75%to 80% they going to rejected, most of past votes is to low for them to accept ,past votes are like 53%,for statehood, they want to make sure that they really want it!!!? They don’t want a divided country that May bring problems later I guess!,that’s how I see it!!!? If you see the map of PR and the towns outcome% is very strange like Rincon that’s a town with military retirement residents,a high percentage of white north Americans since the 70s and they voted no! 60% San Juan voted no!! 60% you wonder! And I guess is the poor that want statehood!! And the rest see higher taxes!!?
The Congress must act, it’s a shame that in the 21st century the so called Land of the Free keep Puerto Rico as a territory, it’s time to take action!
PR will never survive on it’s own.
If they decided to become independent. In 10 years they’ll be poorer than Haiti.
I would suspect in the details you’re going to find that this is a reaction to the drive of rich Americans going there with their wealth….Youtubers/Social Media especially seem to be pushing this trend.
Free at last free at last !!!!!!
Not the sane voting power nor do they pay any taxes to the US either
What is the reason all the sudden? It sounds like a military strategy.
This is an historic moment and I hope that for the sake of my brothers and sisters in the Island that statehood prevails ones again because this would be the final vote the last opportunity to make the Island a state on the same footing as the rest of the states. No more taking advantage of our brothers and sisters as American citizens we have been a part of the American story and have sacrificed with our blood since WW1, WW2, Korean war, Vietnam war, Desert Storm, All Wars Until Present and we have defended Democracy and This Great Nation USA with Dignity and Respect It’s about time to Honor our Hero’s Borinqueneers and the many contributions our Boricuas Have Made. Puerto Rico Has Earned The 51st State Many Years Ago Let’s Make History Together Let’s Welcome Puerto Rico With Open Arms As The New Addition To Our Flag. United We Stand.
The elections would look differant as well and the out cones
It be great if puerto rico becomes a full bloom nation. And that way decided its own future without waiting. For anybody to do it for then
No to Statehood. Puerto Rico Libre Puñeta!
STATEHOOD FOR PUERTO RICO!
Hawaii and Puerto Rico shouldn’t be part of America they should become their own independent
I support the move for Statehood for all the Territories.
Samoa and the Marianas don’t have enough people to become states though.
Nothing is going to happen period
Puerto Rico isn’t going to vote to become a state, many people don’t want that. People want the free hand outs, but don’t want statehood.
Every year they bust out this storyline.
Puerto Ricans have expanded their culture….despacito, despacito around the world. Weeeeepa
I have four grandparents all Puerto Rican born, I’m curious how it’s going to go down. I’m ok with majority of votes. Again I’m ok with majority of votes.
I hope that includes them being Puerto Rican citizens and not u.s. citizens.
Hmmm, from the sound of this Puerto Rico has all the rights to declare what they wanted to do and US citizens have NO rights on whether we want Puerto Rico or not. DOES SOUND LIKE SOMETHING THE DEMONCRAPS WOULD DO.
Could this be a trap of Politician on the congress for Puerto Rico lose their US citizenship with no warranty of US citizenship in Puerto Rico?…
Lol
Puerto Rico fought for its freedom and was shut down real quick. America pretty much crushed anyone opposed to colonization…
Puerto Rico still benefits from being considered or affiliated with America though! They offer non-citizens American banking services as well as offer Americans loopholes for taxes apparently.
Oh they won’t be a state , they will be a frickin Cuba . They will actually be worse because they are a prideful and contentious people . Just date one and you’ll see . But without US now they will be an huge island ghetto . After all they just got a huge FEMA stimulus over last so many years .
Good luck GOP gonna shoot that down. I really want PR as a state with circumcision rate less than 1%.
THANK GOD.. F The USA WE DONT CARE FOR AMERICANS.. BECAUSE THEY NEVER CARED ABOUT US..
Better yet give them independence. They are a parasite to the USA.
Ojala por que tanta corruption .por eso me fui
how about the “american citizens” because they’re in an american teritory?
if they become independent, all US citizenships should be revoked too.
Oddly I’m equally for Statehood or independence. It’s not an easy choice for everyone involved. FYI: PR has many debt issues, owning a lot of money. Default, nonpayment and govt funding becomes the US problem. Independence makes it the islands problem which might lead to default and destabilization and not good for the region.
The obstructionist GOP will knock it down.
I think they should just let the territories to become States. They need to stop with this Republican vs Democrat crap.
Send all of the criminals to Cuba and Puerto Rico
Sounds like a long con for making Puerto RIco a state
Amen!
Only reason why dems wants to open pr and s because they get votes
This is the land of the free and if Puerto Rico wants to join America then By all means give them that choice 🇺🇸
Do the same in the entire us.
Why would they want to be part of the US— they should vote for independence— US citizens should get to vote whether we want any more states too
Give them independents
Blah blah…
Yes please let’s de colonize the welfare territory.
china is garbage
Stop all production in china
Hopefully china goes bankrupt
This is not new .
They do this all the time nothing new! We are going to stay the way we are it’s not convenient for US to let us become independent and I most certainly don’t want to become a state.
They should decolonize Washington DC, split California into three states, and merge the two Dakotas.
Florida should be it’s own country.
@B Jones It should be returned to the ocean.
@RiteMo LawBks Haha, yes indeed.
Taxation without representation is tyranny. 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷
The only thing that they have to look forward to is being taxed to death!
Ironic, that Puerto Ricans on the lsland chose the Republican party to dcide and vote in the congress for statehood for Puerto Rico, when they oppose statehood for Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico and American Samoa hook ‘em up!
ESTATE FREE ASOCIASION 🇵🇷💪🙏 With a new and Good Politicans.
Let them become their own country
Ah yes they say replacement theory isnt real but then do this 😂
The 51st steak…
decolonizing in the XXI century?…🤣🤣🤣👍💯
Good who cares about that third world dump
Because of AOC Communist Hate America Values. I hope it gets rejected.
Good. It’s long overdue. If that’s what they want.
Bruh 🤣
AOC is a clown.
This is so woke
Msg to far right republicans…”Game over Cabrones”😎
Where my selection bar was on top?
Lmao
Let it be it’s own country!
How will Puerto Rico survive ??? They dont mass produce or export anything
My Puerto Rican friend said this is dumb and would leave the state ripe for corruption
And when is usa giving México half the land they stoled?
They have no business in Puerto Rico
Let them be their own Country and support them selves now that’s Independence.
Puerto Rico is being moving to China for Long years so your enemies will be at your Doors Russia in Cuba China in Puerto Rico
That would be great if Puerto Rico became an independent nation!
im from puerto rico, theres a chance that might go,but theres also a high chance that might not go thou, instead they will stretch it out as much as they can ,why?the first this most if the all puertoricans will do is call for help from the U.S. government to put some control over the current senators here,WHICH ofcourse they will not want cause theres and EXTREME high chance that most of them will just flat out go straight to jail sent by the FBI. 2 times american has given puerto rico a very solid injection of economic support and in both times the money just disappeard, the currently situation the islanf has now is electrical and power operations,The U.S. actually sent a hefty amount of money to help puerto rico modernize the electrical system(since maria) but apperantly the money is gone and no one knows what a happen…..so yeah….theres a chance that bill MIGHT pass……but odds are it will not and the politics here will just stretch the subject out enough TO MAKE IT LOOK like there trying to help, they’ve done it before and they will do it again…….BUT there tower of lies is slowly collapsing
Lol. Never Puerto Rico will never let it go. Laughters
Can it another Taiwan?
Many Puerto Ricans that grew between the 60s-late 80s generally prefer statehood because when they grew up, Puerto Rico was still fresh with the ELA status and things seemed to look ok on the surface. But those of us born in the 80s and 90s have only lived a Puerto Rico plagued with problems, most stemming from this relationship with the U.S. Statehood for us is the worst decision possible. We actually lose more by becoming a state than people here can imagine.
