A New Jersey family is suing a funeral home for $50 million alleging that they switched the body of their 93-year-old mother with a stranger. NBC News’ Steven Romo reports on how the family became suspicious when the woman in the casket appeared to be 20 years younger and had her own teeth while their mother wore dentures.

I do believe things were handled wrong here, mistakes happen. Sadly the only way many businesses are learning to prevent mistakes is by being sued. Hit them in their wallet and most do better. However, they actually gave an apology, that is rare! They gave their money back, also rare. Maybe some competition for emotional distress, but in no way do they deserve 50 million (IMO) nor do I believe they’ll be awarded that amount. So sorry this happened to both families involved.

The day of my dad’s funeral the Funeral Home director came to me and said someone was disputing my dad’s claim over the burial plot. This guy was saying it was his. I had an aunt that I hadn’t seen in 30 years running around screaming, “Pay him off! Let’s just get this over with!” I got my brothers and the directors and went to their office. That aunt tried to follow us in, but I shut the door in her face. I wanted to confront the person disputing the burial plot, but the director said he didn’t want to talk to us. That and the aunt screaming for us to pay him made me suspicious. Plus, they had just opened the grave site that day, so someone was either watching that burial plot every day to see if anyone opened it (not likely) or someone close knew about the history of the plot and decided to cash in on our grief! I told the director that we’d proceed as normal to the gravesite. Then after everyone was gone they’d bring my dad back and put him on ice. I was going to get to the bottom of this. Several days later I had it all figured out and my dad was buried in that plot. There was two plots that originally belonged to one of my aunts (not the one at the funeral home) and she gave one to my dad to bury my mom. She also said he could have the other one so he could be buried next to her. That aunt was dead, but her son lived in Georgia and I contacted him. He had the deeds to the plots and knew about the arrangement his mom had made and gladly sent me the deeds. He also informed me that the man disputing the plot was the ex husband of the aunt that was running around trying to get us to pay him. They were in the scam together, trying to get money out of us in a time of grief. My first thought wasn’t to sue anyone, it was to get even! With security footage from the funeral home and plenty of eye witnesses the police issued an arrest warrant for both of them and they were picked up in days! That was 15 years ago, so I’m sure they’re out of jail by now, but lord help them if I ever lay eyes on either one of them again!

The funeral home took my grandpa’s body to the wrong cemetery and it led to alot of confusion. He was a WW2 veteran so there was military people we needed to coordinate with so that made everything stressful.I guess I can understand some dissatisfication on the familys part They are entitled to be refunded for the cost of the funeral and maybe cost of distant family member’s travel cost that they had to extended due to the mix up and any extra cost to the family due to the mix up makes sense. I don’t know about 50 million though.
