Many people see Chile as Latin America’s most successful economy. People keep going there to find work.
But Chileans have been protesting against the rising cost of living and income inequality. Some say they don’t even have enough money to see out the month.
So how did Chile earn its shining reputation? Is there a dark side to Chile’s success story? And will a proposed new constitution resolve Chile’s problems?
Start Here explains.
Same thing is happening in the US but it is not emphasized because compared to other countries poor people in America have more money but have to use those dollars to pay for the same things but much more expensive prices. We are on the same model as Chile
the communists always causing trouble
They should elect a socialist bus driver to fix their problems then. it worked wonders for Venezuela
Chile is poor now.
Long live Chile. I hope we have a future USA president that supports our central and south American family more.
Chile was going very well.
But their people doesn’t know enough about socialism.
Marxism just need some ignorant minds and that kind of massive hysteria for getting stronger.
USA no tiene ningún interés en Chile ya. Estamos entrando en la esfera de inferencia de China.
I’m getting addict of watching this portion of Al Jazeerah, so educational
@Alexej Novák Aljazeerah and RT is not CNN and FOX
@Amazing World , do you really believe that government-funded media wont spread its propaganda?..
@Alexej Novák you know something when it’s propaganda, you can sense it, your experience and knowledge verifies it.. You can tell it, so far I never saw AJ doing propaganda in their news. On the other side RT may look so anti USA, but at least all they publish is truth and the news casters are just presenting the news without mixing any opinionated propaganda to twist the reality of the video and report when it doesn’t fit their interest, exactly what CNN and FOX are doing since their existence brainwashing Americans.
@Amazing World , as a Russian, I can say that RT is a propaganda of Putin’s dictatorship. They had even fakenews about Putin-burger in 2017, I guess. So RT is really biased like every other state-funded channel. What about AJ+(it’s Al Jazeera too)? They spread their propaganda about Israel, hatred towards Donald Trump (isn’t it weird that some arab state funds the anti-Trump propaganda?..) You need to realize that ALL media are bogused and spread “their thoughts”, not the truth. That’s why you should read more source in order to get a real depiction of the situation
@Alexej Novák what you see I Aj+ is not propaganda, it just happen that only Aljazeerah is covering the behind the crimes of Israeell, while your CNN and FOX is twisting everything for their own interests. The world saw how CNN dismissed their anchor for speaking truth on the issue in the Un. You are too much over brainwashed by CNN, BBC, Fox that when you see it on Aljazeerah you automatically think it’s Propaganda.. You can verify it to the people living on that area they go live and you can see it with your eyes. AJ and RT also go live during their protest while CNN reports “Terrorist” having “CLASH” on the border with IDF, when the truth is Palestinian holding their old door keys to their abandoned houses is only protesting for their rights to return to their own houses. You just another product of brainwashing darling, the world knows the truth and the world except the brainwashed are with Palestine.
Not pointing out the fact that low income wage growth has been outpacing high income wage growth is a mistake.
Chicago boys made poverty to increase in Chile as never saw before in history, they have a world record in creating poverty (real)
@Rule Ten great argument haha
Luis Hernán Briones it is literally false. The standard of living has increased larger than any other South American nation.
@Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani this country grew more than most in the 90s, but I dont think he is talking about that, check out the economic crisis of ’83 and what (who) caused it.
Chile was never so rich in its history as after the Chicago boys. All governments after the Pinochet followed his economic policy.
@R V economic growth below the historical average, highest poverty in history… wonderful. Fortunately left wing governments started fixing that system. Now is the time to bury it
Capitalism is the culprit, it only benefits the rich, it is outdated and we all need a change or things will keep getting worst. It is not that difficult to understand. For every private company, making a projected profit is the true outcome, whether by raising prices for goods/services or offering low paying jobs and when a low paying job can’t fulfill the needs for day to day living, that is when issues become apparent.
I was poor. I worked. I’m doing good.
@Rule Ten what is your wage in a month
Chileans protests was a massive hysteria.
They already have a strong democracy.
Socialists doesn’t know what they are asking by. It’s like:
“— Democracy, democracy, democracy.”
So socialist is elected and pay the media for aprove the governance being done. And they will never know they already had democracy.
Sandra eloquence 😍
I agree, she is very impressive.
The economic hardships Chileans are going through are to varying degrees similar to those of many other Latin American countries. Inequality, poverty, bad pensions, low incomes, expensive groceries, how privatizations made life more expensive, lack of care or empathy from governments for most of the population, most Latin Americans can relate to that. I’m not Chilean but with all due respect, from my point of view, when it comes to the social unrest seen in Chile, the Chilean government was begging for it. I pretty much feel that México could have also experienced social unrest if Federal Elections had not taken place. I remember very well how people were fed up. I was.
Empresarios ladrones y políticos corruptos gobiernan Chile…
This is the simple answer of populism
Apruebo
There’re actually 3 sides or “viewpoints” for this social issue:
-Chile’s a poor country because of foreign companies making money out of our Health and Educational systems, water and electricity (This is what the majority of people see, at least 60% of it)
-Chile needs a few changes to make people “less poor” but we need to keep the neo-liberalist system running no matter the cost (This is what the government and the central-right say/believe in, 10% of the country more or less)
-Chile’s under attack from the commies/cubans/venezulans, they’ve brainwashed the poor and want to start a communist regime (This, as dumb as it may sound, is what the people on the far right believe, which is 20% of the country more or less; aka the “rich” class. This is why you all will see some sort of civil war between the “far-right-rich” [we call em “fachos”] and the “poor” protestants)
Chile is a big mess right now, but you can all blame on the “rich” and Pinochet’s constitution for making us poorer and poorer each day, and not allowing us to make new laws to even the field.
Chile has higher prices than Spain for a third of the income for every person …and Spain is not that rich by European standards !!!…and Chile is the richest south American country by GDP per capita…
@Alfredo Lepe martinez What it is not true ?
Uruguay is the richest and expensive country in the whole Latin America
An idea for a video… East Africa proposed union of countries or west Africa proposed single currency ECO
Yeah, I know. It’s fascinating!
I love that this channel casually glances salvador allendes presidency. He was the first marxist communist president, and was nationalizing all the industries, leading to economic instability and collapse due to his socialist policies.
in case anyone has any questions I’m the teacher in the video.
@Luis Hernán Briones you might not respond but can you give me the source that state 1 taking 33% of GDP?
@SwanTheChosenOne someone else asked that, can u check my other responses? It’s somewhere around here… It was from fundación Sol… But I don’t have the link now
@Luis Hernán Briones didn’t poor people get richer to
@Luis Hernán Briones Hello, thank you for taking the time to answer all these questions.
Is there a country in the World with a political and/or economical system that you would want to see being adopted to Chile?
@Aleksanteri R hi, yes, Finland. Even though I’ve never been there myself I know quite a few Finnish people, but maybe that’s aiming to high… I think I’d settle for Uruguay or Costa Rica.
Would you please make a video on the history of the militant groups in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.
And usa and uk war crimes around the world.
Can we have it on Start Here on Nigeria’s Boko Haram terrorist group
I really interested to watch this series of video from Al Jazeera. I request you to upload the video in the range of one week.
I’m from Afghanistan, it’s important for me to know more about U.S and Taliban peace deal.
Thanks

Hi
Please do a start here on the recent Citizen Amendment Act in India and how it will affect the world.
Such a drastic step by the worlds largest democracy will have future reprecussions
@Saaduddin Ansari It may not be extreme as that. However with the earth becoming a global village, peacefully co-operation is very important. Viewpoints from all sides are important.
@Rakesh Ningthoujam Manipuri bhau
Hi can you do a video on the communist government in Nepal?
Why is it a different form of communist government than other nation?
How is your life in nepal
Unfortunately, the left parties are behind the protests which aim to create confusion and a platform to gain political power. All this backed by other Latin-American countries like Cuba and Venezuela. The common protesters have some very valid reasons but people were manipulated by those politicians and party followers who have not been able to get into power via elections. Chile could be that dream country as the presenter says in her final sentence and the Chileans should find a way to preserve what works and improve whatever is not working that well.
Anyone who wants to try a different model could try moving to Venezuela, or Bolivia, Ecuador the list goes on. There’s a reason they are all moving to Chile. It’s because the alternative the left is pushing is not the utopia which was promised. La mina en este video es más hermosa que la cresta 10/10.
@Friendly Human maybe, but most the countries you can point to have major geographical and historical advantages Chile doesn’t have. Chile’s success is only impressive because of it’s region being so hard to succeed in, something places like denmark don’t have to worry about.
Your thoughts on inequality do have some truth behind them, though.
@0:20 is there anyway i can get your phone number, shawty?
Yeah, I would like to quarantine with her.
Great show! Please upload a detailed analysis on why Pakistan has had many military coup. Are the people in support of the coup?
This is the first talk that is informative about what happens in Chile and why. Liberal democracy and free market got its problem in practice. It is not to be ridiculed or laughed at of course. My personal humble view is the solution lies at the willinnness of a scociety to hold itself together in a collectivistic manner, which has been overlooked and underestimated even to the extent of being politically incorrect. Individuals do not have the obligaiton to the whole society and the duties to sacrifice for it, neither do politicians with their personal ambitions with power. The elites of the country has the responsibility to reshape the regime and system to tip the balance in favor of the collective whole in terms of physical and economical security.
Whats her name
well, we had the “Berkley Mafia” back in the days… we did have good economic improvement, but all that comes to an end because of corruption & nepotism at the top of the executive branch, plus the military was given too much power over the public polices & involved in too many businesses
Chile is special indeed. They are the only country in South or Central America that is on the USA visa free list.
Sounds like Kenya
Go back to Socialism
Yeah destroy what they achieved. Plunder the Economy for Hungry Santa
hi sandra… would u please cover the NRC and CAB… happening in India…
Please don’t forget to attach subtitles with the videos
Anybody else noticed that her upper buttons are always loose, in not all, most of her videos. But that what makes me click so its workin’
Zimbabwe anyone ? Nooo Oky
Yes, someone is here.
Hi there , I am Jampa , can you please cover the economics of Nepal ? There die to corruption of the government almost 80 percent of the young people goes out of the country to support their family , and country is very very poor
As a chilean i can say that we have never been more prosperous, even with all injustices and inequalities included, but because of this crisis and toxic ideologies from left wing political parties and intellectual elites is coming to and end, and i really i hope i’m wrong because it will affect poorest sectors of the population the most and not those parasitic groups that bring those reformations into place
Lol inequality in Nigeria is top notch, talk about pensions? Some pensioners collect as low as $20 per month. And the worst of all, they’re owing some of them a year plus in pension payment despite the penny
this is fascinating from the economist’s perspective
First I check wich media channel it is what is its funding source cz all are paid or biased… checking AlJazeera I just comment and close
Cover Armenia and Azerbaijan conflict as well
Pension payment in many the countries do not take into account the probable inflation in the prices of good and services, especially consumables and hence those amount are insufficient for the survival needs of the old people, as the years pass.
Chile’s problem is compounded by the surrounding poor nations.
wat?
@Chahdil Chouaib 🤔
Dont become Argentina and Venezuela with overly Socialist programs without production and business
@Ziad Ghannam socialism leads to Venezuela, N. Korea or Socialist China.
Liberty leads to the Miracle of Chile, Singapore or former Hong Kong. Nobody wants to be the first three.
@Dominick Destine Socialism is really good I think you just compared all of that country because they are both saying they are socialists. N.K and Venezuela are different in China, China became powerful because of neoliberalization. Chilean socialist Allende achieved more things in just a decade in Chile that U.S eager to removed him.
So what is happening to the economy during Covid-19 Lockdown; work at home and job losses. I’m sure hurting the economy is hurting from unemployment and loss of healthcare from their job.
LeT THe MAgiCal HAnD oF tHe EcONNOmy HAnDlE IT!
Giv me dat for free.
TL;DR
Chilean economy is a “success” because the system exploit workers, with absurd low wages and making people slaves of debt. This translates to massive earnings to the rich people. A huge GDP “per capita” but all the money is in the hands of a tiny amout of rich families
By the way, Piñera doesn’t support a new constitution, he doesn’t say that because it’s no good for his position because left and right winged people hates him, but you can see it in the ministers he choses, they are all against the new constitution.
I loved, it helped me a lot to understand better what is going in Chile. Thanks
Is just one side of the story dear. The left side.
Hi guys, i’m from Chile. In my experience, since i was in school, i have to say every teacher in schools learnt socialist doctrines, using the inequity speech to convice people the life they lives are bad (And the system too), Saying every time Salvador Allende was the best president of Chile and blaming to USA for the inflation in that time.
If you see the statistic from Chile, in 30 years, since we recover our democracy, the country grew up in different areas : The gini ‘s coefficient decreased 9 points, more people could access to the University, we are one of the most free economies in the world, etc.
However, how a country could work if there are teachers whose are indoctrinating our kids with marxism ideas since 10 years? Now the socialdemocracy is the most popular idea here, people wants a state controller of the economy, increasing taxes and trying to separate Chile, becoming this country in a plurinational country.
Our constitution is the best because prevents every colectivism idea can work in Chile. Now, those socialdemocrats and marxist can change Chile because all those Kids are adults.
@Massinissa Ibrahimi could you define what’s the limit of a person of increasing their money? People needs more protection from state, i agree, but it doesn’t mean the existence of people with more money than other is bad. We do not believe in socialism. Inequality in that way is not the problem. Free education and health with quality for people with less money is the main problem, because poor people can’t emerge. That’s the only way to reduce inequality.
@Massinissa Ibrahimi No. A mixed system is answer. If people want to choose private institutions, they are free to choose. If not, just use the public services free.
I’m Chilean and I do not agree with the protest. Pick whatever economic indicator and you will see chile is better now than before.
The problem is the politiciana are inside the state (mostly from the extreme left) judges, IRS (SII), and many others. You can avoid the law, even the taxes if you belong to a left political party (just look for that in the local news, everybody knows).
I can’t believe the video interview an English teacher and a woman from a political party talking about economics (lol). Almost all economists agree Chile is better now.
In my opinion, the problem is the culture. Latinos cannot deal with other person success.
what about the inequality? I agree Chile has never been more prosperous tho
I do not think that this channel say the truth about what is happening in Chile, so I think that the puppets of Cuba, I mean Forum of Sao Paulo wants to make to believe that all is wrong at this country with a speech based on divission wich is not the real wa to solve problems.
The Country need more Chicago Boys
@M K It is known, also by the democratic governments later, that it was the right economic policy. The applied the same policies: privatization, export, subsidiarity.
@M K Pinochet didn’t stop it. To this day Chile has the freest economic in S. America, and is also its richest country
Commie propaganda and statist demagoguery is the perpetual enemy of capitalism, and all the wealth and prosperity it creates.
During the period in which Milton Friedman and the Chicago Boys’ free market policies were applied, wages dropped by 8%, and family allowances by 28%. GDP grew, yes, but that was merely the rich getting richer. It was such a failure that Pinochet himself had the government intervene.
Didn’t Allende get overthrown because he ignored reality. He thought he was going to get away with bad policies.
3:35 here in Brazil this is way too more worse. Btw, our GDP per capita is even lower than Chile. I’m lucky to be a guy who born in a middle class family, but we do everything possible to save money and keep a good standard living.
Always question authority to make them grounded🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
No taxation without representation🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Middle class should question always the system because they run the nation not the idiots who get salary out of their tax especially corrupt people in authority 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Why doesn’t Al Jazeera cover the Bangladesh story ???
So they eradicated poverty by moving the poverty line lower? That’s scary.
The “poverty line” isn’t variable. It is a certain part of the average income.
Many people in Chile think that changing the constitution they will get higher wages, there will be less corruption and there will be better schools and hospitals. But wages has to do with productivity and inversion, corruption with their own mentality and infrastructure with the amount of money the country can save every year. I hope, enough people understand it.
So, with bitcoin hitting the $56,000 mark, the question on everyone’s mind is: What’s next? What does the future hold in terms of price, regulation and adoption of this “digital gold?” I actually wasn’t left out I started investing with Luís when it was $30,000 and today I I’m benefiting from it. Sir luiz platform actually make you earn 10x the amount you invest in crypto..
unfortunatly the socialists are starting to infect the chilean government again
Keep whining while socialist countries starve.
Considering Qata who fund this channel.. The hypocrisy is over the top
GDP per capita tells you nothing. It just takes the GDP and divides it by the population as if it were distributed evenly. It is not. 33% goes to just 1% of the population, leaving the rest of the country poor. Similarly, when they say poverty has reduced, they are just referring to the fact that they changed the definition of poverty so that it applied to fewer people. The actual material conditions of the population did not change. Chile is only a “success story” for the upper class, and its recovery from the Pinochet-induced crisis of the 1980s depended on the country’s copper mines, which were never privatized. It also depended on a government bailout (sound familiar?). Chile is in upheaval because of the very inequality that lead to Allende’s election in the seventies. And just as the response back then was a violent repression it is once again violence, as shown in the video.
Median income is also the highest in the region
@Simone Coletta the other countries in the region also suffered US-backed coups and/or military dictatorships. See “operation condor” for more on that. Chile is just the one that got away with the least damage. In large part, this is because of the surge in social programs following the fall of Pinochet’s dictatorship and, as I mentioned, the fact they never privatized their copper mines.
This brings to mind Americas absurd poverty line. First off, it doesn’t take into account the fact that some areas are far more expensive to live in than others (a “federal poverty line” is a laughably absurd metric by any standard) secondly, it’s so low that to qualify for any public assistance you have to be making, as an individual earner, less than 12k a year. If you adjusted the poverty line to an amount you would need to afford all basic necessities of life, a full one third or more of Americans would be living in poverty. The same goes for unemployment. There are almost as many ways to fudge unemployment numbers as there are unemployed. The real unemployment rate in the US is something to the tune of 20%
With all the respect, Argentina and Chile must remember that romanians colonised those 2 countries and gave their King Julius Popper!!! You must come back to your capital city Bucharest!!
chile economy = copper…. thats it. like saudi arabia but on different material.
I’m from Chile. And well It’s true that Chile have to improve the education, health and pensions. But the problem here is the society. The people haven’t learned to value what they have in compered to others Latin countries. And at the same time most of left-wing political groups have take the education expanding their ideologies of resentment, missing the progress thinking.
Humans are fiercely egalitarian. In hunter gatherer groups, where we have evolved to, it helped social cohesion and helped cooperation instead of dominance. No one should have more food than others. In present societies there is a mismatch between what we are vs what is. Inequality will always lead to resentment because we have been hardwired to think like that, even between rich people, either by competition or jealousy. All of our psychologies need to be rewired or we should try to have a more equal society. USA has the same problem, while Europe has this problem less and people are generally more happy there.
@m33LLS Let me guess? The Future of Capitalism? Well, it is not like it actually matters. So, there is a mismatch between what we are vs what is? Well, what is? That’s not an easy question, honestly, I think we humans are far more complex than that. Just trying to sum up our nature out of certain traits to point a political ideology and give it a kind of natural basis is not enough.
And also, why all of the sudden in current societies? why not in say feudal societies? Maybe it’s because they had a great time. Is it? Not all societies are equal, in the sense that there are many differences between each of them. What you are saying doesn’t apply to societies in which there are low levels of reciprocity between the governed and the rulers.
Should we have more equal societies because no one should have more than others? Who are you to say that? how is that not even the very reason why we have this problem in the first place.
I don’t buy this modern communitarian narrative that we need to implement changes because there is some kind of intrinsic need for balance in society.
I think we humans do not have a limit to our desires, and because today it is so easy for everyone to participate in politics and express their voice, then governments are easily subjected to popular will.
Perhaps we do need some kind of reforms, but no, not for the reasons you mentioned but if any, it would be to try and control that self-destructive desire that represents envy.
So if retirees earn 180 USD-a-month pensions they should be grateful that their country is more prosperous than other countries of the region? 🤨
Finally, because of the pandemic, the referendum was pushed forward to October, where effectively 80% voted to change the constitution and it will be written by an all-citizen body. The elections for that body were in April but, also due to the pandemic, were pushed to May 15-16. We’ll see what happens.
Great video!
I’m a neoliberal myself, the only thing I disagree with is Immigrantion, when you have millions of jobs but not enough worker’s then the wages increase, flooding your country with millions of cheap labor will result in economic growth but it would only be due to more labor not because existing labor is earning more. Milton Friedman was spot on, on how to grow the economy, but with growing economy bi believe we should completely stop all Immigrantion completely
aaaaa
Al Jazeera you live upto to your reputation of being pathetically foolish
Milton Friedman, say no more 🤥
@sebastien holmes Thanks for making me laugh
@Jerzy Feliks freedman was a genius, I’m sorry you can’t see that.
@sebastien holmes No he wasn’t. He was a simpleton whose “wisdom” appealed to similar simple minded people. You can literaly track the corruption of capitalism back to his concepts from the 80s.
I suspect communist leaning ideas and infiltrators have slithered into the Chile… pounding the drum and agitating the public, Chile is a Democratic/Socialist country encircled by hard left Marxist regimes envious of Chile’s economic success, No not perfect, But it is the #1 economy in South America, my advice… fix it, but don’t throw it away, you have a lot to lose, look at your neighbors!
I try to fact check to see they are slanting the facts. there was no mention of the lower cost of living in Chile compared to USA or Europe. If your cost of living is half the US and you make 60% of a US salary, you are winning…
Sounds like America . You can’t say it’s a free market economy when you have mass subsidies for select few in water and electricity that’s corporatism not free market capitalism 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️😅😅do you know free market philosophy
Leftist propaganda to destroy the West, funded by the extremist theocracy Qatar. Google should be punished for allowing this.

The problem with Chile is the Corrupt politicians, just like in the USA and the New generation . They want equality but they want that for free. This is why , these idiots want a Communist President . Chile will be another Argentina or Venezuela if the Communist win, but if did happened I would not rule out another 1973 military involvement to save the Country.
It’s so funny because in Chile really doesn’t feel this way at all. This is a small fringe of radical wealthy suburbanites.
It’s so funny because in Chile really doesn’t feel this way at all. This is a small fringe of radical wealthy suburbanites who are protesting.
5:25 so what?? are you telling me these are suposed to be cheap?? socialism will ruin Chile
U were the ideal model for world… But u failed just like Loosers like Syria, West Africa…. Shame
I just have a few comments on the history of the chicgago boys. First lets clear out that the so called chilean economic miracle never happened under Pinochet, and the neoliberal reforms brought the country to ruin in 1982 huge crisis, poverty, banks closing, total disaster,so they had to tone their neoliberal agenda down. Still, Chile reached a peak in inequality just a year before the plebiscite for bringing democracy back. Afterwards, center left government made lots of refors, specially an increase in taxes so they couod invest in public infrastructure, wich was the key to our export model, and thats when we started growinn at 6, 7%, with a lot of government involvement to diversify our exports. but our rise was shortlive, and we have been steadily declining or stagnating for almost 20 years, no increase in wages, taxes for the reach, lower productivity and growth every year, higher private and public debt. The truth is the Chilean neoliberal model never made us that good, only the toned down version with social democratic reforma, that never went to far because the constituon didnt allow it. The so called progress of the last years has barely managed to undo the damage made by the dictatorship and its economic advisors, but we ahvent really improved inequality in over half a century. For anyone interested, i reccomend the book “Hacia un nuevo pacto” by Oscar Landerretche, it explains this economic issues magnificently. hope it is in english, if not i reccomend anyone to read Jose Gabriel Palma, creator of the palma index for measuring inequality, he is chilean but writes papers in english, so you can learn more from there
Mi General, Augusto Pinochet!
May i suggest that you do a segment about the inequalities that exist in my country South Africa. The gap between the rich and the poor is widening significantly and i would say the middle class is slowly becoming poor
The same here in Chile….the so called middle class is DESTROYED.
Friedman… the cancer.
Under salvador allende chile was poor. There is no perfect system but one delievers results and that is the free market .
Dear the problem in Chile is the corruption of politicians, they take everything from people, and the state government is getting bigger and bigger every day. Plus the brain wash from the left wing in every corner of the country.
