NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel shared the heartbreaking news that his eldest son, 6-year-old Henry, has died. Richard and his wife, Mary, shared their journey publicly after Henry was diagnosed with Rett syndrome, a rare and incurable genetic condition. “We always surrounded him with love and he returned it, and so much more,” Richard wrote.

Henry felt the love of family and did not know fear-mom & dad right there. I am sorry Henry left for awhile as one day you all will be together again. Jesus loves the little children and may you all keep Jesus in you hearts. We are all hear because God, Abba the Father, wanted a family. This made my heart ache for those who knew him and loved him. My son was diagnosed with MD 30 years ago. When we were waiting on the diagnosis and which kind he had. I said as long as it doesn’t shorten his life I can handle whatever is thrown at us. He doesn’t have a firm that will necessarily shorten his life thank god. He has since been diagnosed with several other things and has a severe learning disability but he can walk and feed himself. His speech is very limited and needs help with dressing and cleaning himself. I am so sorry for their loss.
