More than 26 million free meals were served to students every day because of a federal free school lunch for all program that started during the pandemic. Now, that program is ending and families must apply for meal coverage, but only certain incomes meet the requirements. NBC News’ Emilie Ikeda spoke with families directly impacted and looks at how one school district is trying to meet the need.

I never got free lunch because my parents either paid for my lunches, or I would bring a packed lunch if I didn’t like what was being served that day. I don’t see why parents can’t make a simple sandwich and an apple. It’s not that expensive. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these “going hungry” kids have cell phones and parents with fancy cars. Live below your means so you can afford the basics.

The free lunch should come for those below the poverty line and for those above it, the government should require a portion of the guardians paycheck be withheld to cover the lunch… this video right here is why people are hesitant to instate emergency programs… because they never actually go away

Of course kids should never suffer, or be hungry, but at the same time I could only imagine what a failure I would feel like if i couldn’t provide for my children. I know life is difficult but your kids come first and you have a moral obligation to feed them well no matter what, even if it means you yourself do not eat, or take a 2nd or 3rd job. Too many people having kids that cannot provide for them then passing that responsibility towards everyone else. Feed your kids, after all, they are yours to take care of, not anyone else. But of course if you make that argument, then you are seen as inhumane, simply for pointing out that you should take care of your family no matter what. As if saying that being responsible is wrong because it misses the point. Again, TAKE CARE OF YOUR OWN KIDS, OR DONT HAVE ANY.

And being one of those kids growing up not knowing where my next meal was coming from, no matter what grade my child is going into I always send a snack box of chips/crackers and cases of water for the teacher to keep in their room. Just in case there is a child who needs it or forgot their lunch.

The world is cruel and tough. People are greedy, evil and hurt animals and each other every day. You chose to have kids, so you have to accept the challenges humanity puts on you. Best to not have kids, if you can’t afford it. Poverty, depression and anxiety is awful. Avoid that by not having kids being broke or unsuccessful career-wise.

Free meals are a temporary benefit during troubled times, like a pandemic or the subsequent inflation. Meals should not be free during normal times. Reduced-price lunches are a reasonable benefit for lower income families as they have been for decades. (My daughter benefited from reduced-price lunches for a short while when I was between jobs.) Expecting the school system to provide children with free food all the time is not right. Feeding the children we choose to have is primarily our own responsibility.
600,000,000,000+$ goes to the US military every year. Thousands of murderers and rapists get to eat for free in prison. If they just devoted a billion dollars a year and starved the worst criminals, we could easily ensure that all school children in and maybe outside the US eat 2 healthy meals a day. That would probably be a billion $ less that would go into bombing 3rd world children too, a win win.

Well maybe the food will taste better now, because our children hate school lunch. They refuse to eat it. My understanding is that it is NOTHING like it was when I was coming up. Our school lunch was BUSSIN! But we had to pay for it. I don’t mind paying for it if the quality and taste will drastically improve. Otherwise, I’ll just keep getting up in the mornings cooking for our children 🤷🏽♀️

The free lunch is trash anyway . The food was in the trash more often than it was consumed . My kids had the free lunch last year and they always complained that the food was sour , expired and everything was either still frozen in the middle , molded , soggy , or tasted rancid.

Our lunch is $3.50…. when I was in school some odd 10 years ago, it was 1.75. For high school lunch, elementary school was only $1.25. How it can go up this much is unacceptable. Lunch should be free for all children. If we took care of our veterans, elderly, and children as much as we do folks not even citizens, or sending millions or billions in aid to random countries, the country would look a lot different to say the least. Pathetic…. Poor kids. Had to buy a birthday present for my child’s classmate. $50 for a small box of Legos. We’ll go back to the age of only getting one or two presents for Christmas for the majority of American’s if you are lucky.

Especially when enforced by overt government sanctioned discrimination, ideological segregation and blatant coercion using duplicitous language under a faulty premise where noncompliance limits a free citizens ability to work, buy, sell, trade, travel, pursue an education or exercise any other God-given inalienable rights.
Then, when seeing that it’s indeed a global campaign, in the face of world-wide protests, that the media ignores wholesale, while concurrently being sponsored by vaccine producers with no accountability or liability… it is clearly revealed as an absolutely Diabolical scheme.
Then there’s the masks:
The absurd masks turn us into unwitting repeaters for a message we know to be false. When we wear one we are communicating , “you are a biohazard; I am a biohazard; we should be living in fear.” That is shameful and degrading to all involved. Especially to our trusting children.

I never ate school lunch I ate a big breakfast 3 waffles and 2 eggs every morning then ate dinner when I got off the bus really should eliminate school lunch and allow kids to bring a bag of pringles or something small to eat during free period and if anything dollar store cheese and bologna In a package get u a weeks worth of lunch it’s what I ate every day in college 7$ a week for a dollar store 2 liter of soda mr pop one container of bologna and cheese singles and bread and some ketchup 🤷🏼♂️ even tho I had over 10k in my bank account to buy food I choose to eat cheap still do people wasting money on name brand when dollar store brand tastes the same
